This document outlines an experiment conducted by students at St. Lucia Seventh Day Adventist Academy to investigate the relationship between the period and length of a simple pendulum. The experiment involves setting up an apparatus with a pendulum bob, string, and stopwatch to measure the period of oscillations over varying string lengths. The results will be used to plot a graph of period squared against length, from which the gradient and y-intercept can be determined and used to calculate the numerical value of gravitational acceleration.

Topic and Title: Period of a simple pendulum and its length.
Introduction/Theory: Length is the variable that meaningfully affects the period of a simple pendulum.
Skills assessed: M/M
Apparatus and Materials: thread, 200 g pendulum bob, retort stand and clamp, meter rule, stopwatch, scissors, large bulldog clip Procedure: 1. Set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram above. 2. Using the clip, adjust the length, L of the pendulum until it measures 100 cm. 3. The length of the string was recorded. 4. The bob was displaced slightly and released so that it oscillate freely. 5. When the oscillations stabilize, the time taken, t1 for 20 oscillations was recorded. 6. Steps 4 and 5 were repeated and a second time, t2 for 20 oscillations was recorded. 7. Step 2-6 were repeated using different lengths of string. Results: TABLE SHOWING RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS FOR SIMPLE PENDULUM EXPERIMENT
L/cm T1/s T2/ s T/s T2/s2
Treatment of Results and Questions:
T and L are related by,
T2 = 42/g L The period T is given by T= t1 + t2/2 x 1/20 - Plot a graph of T2 against L - Determine the gradient and y-intercept on the graph - Use your answers to calculate the numerical value of g.
