Material Science Test 1

1. A brass rod 350mm long is 25mm diameter in the centre 150mm

and turned down to 20mm diameter for 100mm at each end. It is
subjected to an axial tensile load of 12kN and Youngs modulus =
90GPa.
a) What is the maximum induced tensile stress?
2 marks
b) What is the maximum extension of the rod under load?
3 marks

2. A solder is made from 70% lead28% tin and 2% antimony by weight.

a) What are the atomic % values? 7
marks
b) How many atoms of each element are present in 100g of the
solder? 3 marks

a) Describe the changes that are taking place in the material

structure as the alloy of 30% silver, 70% copper cools from 1000
C to room temperature. 5 marks

3. Briefly describe how fluorescent dye is used to detect surface

cracking. 5 marks

4. Briefly describe the use of magnetic particle crack detection

processes. 5 marks

5. Briefly describe the major differences between the Brinell and

Vickers hardness testing methods and explain why one is more
suited to use in the workshop than the other.
5 marks

6. NZDE Only.
A steel ring is to be heated and shrunk onto a wheel to form a rim repair.
The steel strap has an inside diameter of 1158mm and a thickness of
10mm. It is to be fitted over a wheel of diameter 1160mm. What
temperature must the ring be heated to if the room temperature when the

7. BET Only.
A narrow steel strip 12mm thick is clad each side by strips of magnesium
each 3mm thick. Calculate the change in stress in the steel and
magnesium for each degree centigrade rise in temperature for the
compound strip. Assume that the metals are fully bonded along the length
and that transverse expansion can be ignored.
