Bridge Engineering Project: Information Given

This document provides design parameters and calculations for a 30m bridge with 10 parallel girders. Key parameters include: a live load of HS20/4.27m, a slab thickness of 0.2m, and girder material of A992M steel with Fy=345MPa. Design calculations determine the maximum moment of 1116kN.m/m can be resisted by a W1000x371 section, and the maximum shear of 581.34kN is below the section's shear capacity of 3558kN. Deflection criteria are also satisfied.

Bridge Engineering Project

Information given:

Bridge Span L = 30m

Clear Width = 15m

Live Load = HS20/4.27m

Sc/c =1.85m

Wcu = 24KN/m3

Wws = 23KN/m3

Fy = 420Mpa

Fc = 35Mpa

Wearing surface thickness = 0.07m

Steel type used for (W) structural shape A992M: Fy = 345Mpa, Fu =

448Mpa

The bridge will consist of 10 parallel girders as shown.

Design to be based on 2x106 cycles of loading.

Design Procedure
Slab thickness:

S+ 3.048
min h = 30 0.165m where S= Sc/c= 1.85

= 0.163 < 0.165 use h =0.2m

Assume girder weight and diaphragms = 1155N/m

WDC = 0.2*24 = 4.8KN/m2

WDC = 4.8*1.85 + 1.155 = 10KN/m

WDW =0.07*23 = 1.61KN/m2

WDW = 1.61*1.85 = 3KN/m

Moments calculation :

10302
MDC = 8 = 1125KN.m/m

2
330
MDW = 8 = 337.5KN.m/m

1.85
Load fraction = 1.6764 = 1.1

P16000= 1.1 *71.17 = 78.3KN

P4000= 1.1 *17.8 = 19.6KN

+ MRR = 0
19.6 * 10.24 + 78.3 *14.51 + 78.3 * 18.78 RL * 30 = 0
RL = 93.6KN

Max. moment at 0

+ Mo = 0

Mmax + 78.3 * 4.27 93.6 * 15.49 = 0

MLL = Mmax = 1116KN.m/m

A reduction of 0.75 because of 4 lanes

MLL = 0.75 * 1116 = 837KN.m/m

15.24 15.24
I= L+38 = 30+ 38 = 0.224 0.3 ok

IM = 0.224 * 837 = 187.6

Mut = 1.25 * 1125 + 1.5 * 337.5 + 1.75(1116 + 187.5 ) = 4195KN.m/m

W- section is compact because of shear connectors so Lb < Lp

Mn = Mp = Fy * Zx , b = 0.9

Vu = 0.6 * Fy * Aw Vu = 0.9(0.6*Fy*Aw)
6
4195 x 10
Zx = 0.9345 = 13506x103 mm3

Choose W1000x371 with Zx = 18400 mm3 , Ix = 8160x106 mm4

Checking section for shear

+ MRR = 0

19.6 * 21.46 + 78.3 * 25.73 + 71.17 * 30 RL * 30 = 0

RL = 152.35KN = VLL

IVLL = 0.224 * 152.35 = 34.13KN

W DC . L 1030
VDC = 2 = 2 = 150KN

W DW . L 330
VDW = 2 = 2 = 45KN

Vut = 1.25 * 150 + 1.5 * 45 + 1.75 (152.35 + 34.13 ) = 581.34

KN

Vut 0.9(0.6*Fy*Aw) = 0.9(0.6*345*19.1*1000) = 3558 KN

Where Aw = tw*d

Vut 3558 KN so section is satisfactory to resist shear force

Check Serviceability
30000
Allowed deflection = 800 = 37.5mm

Overall depth of composite section = 0.04*L = 0.04*30 =1200mm satisfactory
