Homework N 1

Read the following texts about Optical Level and interprete it tinto
Spanish to tal about in the next class.

Magnification

Magnification of the optical level is a critical factor to be considered while

choosing an optical level. Almost all the optical levels come with magnification of
20X, 24X, 26X, 28X, 32X and so on. Higher magnification doesnt mean that the
optical level is better; you will notice that with the increasing magnification, the
field view through the tool narrows tremendously. With magnification of 32X or
more, one will only be able to view a very small area through the optical level
and in most cases, it becomes difficult for the user to locate the staff or focus on
it. Usually, an optical level with 24X to 28X magnification is recommended to be
the best. The best way to make sure about it is to compare it yourself by looking
through the optical levels with different magnifications.

Compensator

Compensator is an important unit in a dumpy or optical level. It is a typical

pendulum that is suspended by wire, with dampened movement. Almost all the
modern and high quality optical levels have automatic leveling compensator. The
movement of the compensator is dampened by either air or magnet. While some
tools have either of the two, whereas there are some high quality optical levels
which have their compensator dampened by both air and magnet. In comparison
to air dampened compensators, the magnetic dampened compensators allow
more accurate and faster setup of the device as well as the site.

Prism quality

You would also like to compare the quality of the prism while selecting an optical
level. There are some good quality optical levels that consist of high quality
grade prism that allows the user even to see through bubble leveling from the
back. This type of feature is very useful as it allows easy setup and provides
better accuracy.

IP rating

Like any other technical instrument, the optical level also has environmental
standard protection rating which is known as the IP rating, which indicates the
tools resistivity towards the elements dust and water. Dust and water are the
main elements that the optical level is going to be exposed to when used in
construction sites. You would like to consider this rating if you are likely to use
the tool at construction sites with higher exposure rate. Some optical levels are
constructed in a way that those can also be submerged into water without
actually being damaged physically or functionally. Always remember that the
more is the IP rating, the more will the tool be resistant towards water and dust.

Targeting

Targeting feature is also a necessary factor to be compared when choosing an

optical level. There are many optical levels that are of good quality but targeting
the staff can be a challenge and it can be time consuming. With some optical
levels, the targeting can be done in seconds without even needing to see
through the tool for adjustments. Make sure you check the targeting capability.

Base material

Quality of the base and the material it is made from should also be considered.
As the tool is to be set up on a tripod that can highly affect the device if the base
is not sturdy and strong. Usually the base of most of the optical levels is made of
either hard plastic or metal. plastic is good as there is no risk of corrosion or
paint shading away unlike the optical levels with metal base, but the base made
from plastic are not so strong as compare to the metal ones. Metal base plates
are far stronger and less likely to cross threading on the tripod.

Effective Range of Optical Levels

Effective range is the range of visibility or the area that can be covered
effectively from a fixed point in order to execute a leveling. This is very important
for larger construction sites that require a huge area to be leveled. An optical
level with lesser effective range will be able to cover only up to that limited
distance. For example, if the effective range of an optical level is 100 ft then it
can cover area only till 100 ft or less. With greater range more area will be
covered. So you should select an optical level with a particular effective range
according to the area of the worksite and task to be completed.

Construction

The outer construction must not be forgotten while choosing an optical level.
This instrument is basically used for outdoor applications and it is obvious for the
unit to be exposed to the rough and though outdoor conditions and various
weather elements. Sometimes the unit can also be knocked down accidentally
and fall. If it is liable to be this type of situations, then you should go for a unit
that is strong and robust, which is able to withstand the harshest situation and
still last long. If the tool is needed to be used at a work site with lots of vibration
then you might also consider choosing a shock vibration proof unit. A metal
constructed optical level is best for heavy duty construction sites.

Warranty and additional accessories

You should try to find a tool that offers maximum warranty duration, which is
necessary for future. Almost all the optical levels come with some additional
accessories like staff, tripod, measuring tool and many more. you would like to
consider the accessories included.
