2010 Ee358 EmagII MidTerm I

This document is the midterm exam for a course on fundamentals of electromagnetic fields and waves. It contains 3 questions. Question 1 asks to find the dielectric constant needed for zero reflection at an interface between multiple dielectric regions. Question 2 asks about anti-reflection coatings for solar cells, including calculating reflection without coating and determining coating thickness and dielectric constant for 100% transmission. Question 3 asks about oblique incidence at a dielectric interface, including finding the Brewster angle and expressing the incident and transmitted electric field vectors.

Fundamentals of Electromagnetic

Fields and Waves: II

Spring 2010, EE 30358, Electrical Engineering, University of Notre Dame

MidTerm Exam: I

Tuesday, Feb 16th, 2010.

Notes: There are THREE questions in this exam. Answer all. BOX your final answers. Draw
figures wherever necessary.

1) EMag Wave Propagation across Multiple Dielectrics (8 Points):

Figure 1: Multiple dielectric interfaces.

Figure 1 shows a multiple dielectric region. All symbols have their usual meanings. Regions 1
and 4 extend to z = and z = + respectively. You have to find the dielectric constant
of region 1 such that the reflection coefficient for a normal incidence EMag wave moving to the
right is zero at O1 , that is, (O1 ) = 0. Use the Smith chart provided to find r in region 1 to
meet this criteria.

2) Antireflection Coatings for Solar Cells (6 Points):

Sunlight

Antireflection Coating

Silicon Solar Cell

Figure 2: Anti-reflection coating for Solar Cells.

Solar cells produce electric energy from sunlight. To get the highest efficiency, one needs to
couple as much of the sunlight into the solar cell by reducing any reflection from the surface of
the solar cell. This is achieved using anti-reflection coatings. Figure 1 shows the setup. Assume
that light is incident from air perpendicularly on the surface of a Silicon solar cell (assume
Si 90 for simplicity).
(a) If no anti-reflection coating is used, find the fraction of the incident power reflected from
the surface of the Silicon solar cell at green wavelength ( = 500 nm in air). Sunlight has most
energy content at this wavelength.
(b) Find the thickness dm and the dielectric constant m of the anti-reflection coating required
to achieve 100% transmission of green light into the Silicon Solar Cell.

3) Oblique incidence on dielectric interface, Brewster Angle (6 Points):

An EMag wave of parallel polarization (Ei in the plane of incidence) is incident from region 1
(1 = 0 ) to region 2 (2 = 40 ) at an angle i . The magnitude of the electric field in region 1 is
E1 and the propagation constant in region 1 is 1 .
(a) Find the Brewsters angle.
(b) Sketch a figure showing all the electric field, magnetic field, and propagation direction vectors.
(c) Write down vector expressions for Ei and Et , the incident and transmitted electric field
vectors in terms of the parameters given above.
