Renaissance Performance Task (70 points)

World History, Vecsi/Carney

Goal: Students will demonstrate mastery of one major aspect of the European Renaissance through
their collaborative work on a performance task as well as their individual reflection.

Due Date: Monday, March 20


Class work days: March 8, 9, 13, 17

Instructions:
1. You will be assigned a group to work with on this project.
2. Create a group name and answer the questions about group norms. These will be your guidelines for
working together as a group.
3. In your group, decide on a topic. If you have trouble deciding, please ask for guidance from Ms.
Carney or Ms. Vecsi.
4. After you have chosen a topic, choose a medium with which you will demonstrate knowledge of your
topic.
5. Begin working as a group on initial research on your topic and making a plan of action for how to
proceed on the project.

Media:
Students will create ONE of the following, in their group:
1. a PowerPoint presentation (6-8 minutes)
2. a short essay (3 pages, double spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins)
3. a play or skit (presented for 6-8 minutes)
4. A video (sound quality MUST be good enough so that dialogue is audible!!) (6-8 minutes)

Topics: (All topics refer to the broad period of 1300-1700)


1. Humanism and Christian Humanism
a. Must explore in depth: Petrarch, Erasmus, Thomas More
b. Must include other key scholars
c. Must include reference to longer-term effects of humanist philosophy (still around today!)
2. The Arts: painting, sculpture, architecture
a. Must include Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Giotto, Durer, Bruegel, Van Eyck
b. Must include mention of at least some of the major works of these artists
c. Must include social, religious, and historical context of the major artistic works
3. Literature and Poetry
a. Must explore in depth: Dante Alighieri, Giovanni Boccaccio, Vittoria Colonna, William Shakespeare
b. Must include examples of major works and/or excerpts/readings from major works
c. Include historical context of when major works were written
4. The rule of the Medicis in Italy, and Machiavellis The Prince
a. Must include historical context of Machiavellis writing of the Prince
b. Include or reference actual excerpts (translated) of The Prince
5. The Printing Press
a. Must include mention of predecessors (invented by the Chinese)
b. Must include impact during the Renaissance, impact throughout history
c. Must include cause and effect relationship between invention of printing press and the spread of ideas
through Europe during the Renaissance

Individual Reflection:
In addition to the group project listed above, each student will complete a 350-word minimum (400-
word maximum) reflection on your work on this project. In your reflection, I would like to see you
answer the following questions:
1. What did you do well on this project?
2. What could you have done better?
3. How well did the other members of the group contribute to the final product?
4. What do you think the other members of the group will say about what its like to work with you?
