Friday, February 3rd is a P.A. Day. The school will be closed to students. Monday,
February 20th is Family Day. The school will also be closed on this day.

Report cards will go home with students on Monday, February 27th, 2017.

Visitors to JWB
We love our visitors/volunteers at JWB. Just a reminder that for the safety of our students and as per
fire regulations, everyone in the building needs to be accounted for. Even if you regularly volunteer and
we know you quite well, we still require that you sign in at the office.

If you need to speak with a teacher, please ensure that arrangements are made ahead of time, so as not to
interrupt classes. Quite often, before or after school, they are involved in school clubs, activities or on
duty.

If you need to meet with administration, please call the school or email them directly. We thank you for
your understanding.

Leadership
We have quite an exciting month ahead of us this February. Here are the initiatives we have going on
this month!

1. The "We Are Love" campaign! Our focus this month will be on character traits such as mutual
respect, positivity and kindness. In order to promote this within the school community, students will be
encouraged to write kind notes to others on heart-shaped papers that will be provided by teachers. These
will then be displayed on our "We Are Love" banner that is up in the hallway by the lobby. In addition
to this, students will be encouraged to wear blue every Wednesday in February in support of anti-
bullying.

2. Candy grams are back! We will be selling candy grams in support of our selected Me to We initiatives
in Hati during the week of February 13-17. They will be sold for $1 each. Representatives will come to
classes once a day during second break, and will also be selling at the Dance-a-thon.

3. The dates of our two spirit days this month have been changed. The changes are as follows: Pattern
Day, which was originally on February 8th, will now be on Friday, February 10th. Future Career
Day, which was originally on February 22, will now be on Friday, February 24th.
Eco-Club
Our Junior and Senior eco-clubs are joining up to promote energy conservation and waste minimization
over the next 4 weeks! Representatives from each club will be monitoring each class' ability to properly
sort their waste, as well as turn off the lights in their classroom when it is not being used. At the end of
the month of February, the most eco-friendly class in each division will be rewarded with a hot
chocolate party!

Message from the Library

Welcome back! There are many exciting things going on in the JWB Library! Grade 8 Open Space
runs every Monday morning at first break. This is a chance for our most senior students to relax, do
homework, study, play games, or just sit and chat with students from their own class, as well as other
grade 8 classes. Often called the Library Living Room, in public libraries, this is a welcome
opportunity to stay warm and have fun in our beautiful library.

Our chess club for grades 4 6 is in full swing on Tuesdays at second break. Who knew JWB had so
many talented chess players. Mrs. Salai, Miss Zell and Mrs. Vallorani are having a great time watching
these talented students challenge each other.

JWB is proud to offer the Ontario Library Associations Forest of Reading to our students. The Forest
of Reading is a program that offers ten books at each level all written by Canadian authors and the
students vote on their favourite book. Students in JK to grade 3 will be reading and voting on the Blue
Spruce books during their regular library visits. Silver Birch Express offers a mix of fiction and non-
fiction and will run at break time once a week for grade 4 students. Silver Brich offers both fiction and
non-fiction for students in grades 5 and 6, and Red Maple offers fiction books for students in grades 7
and 8. Both of these clubs will also run during a break time during the week. Students that join the
clubs are required to read at least five books by the end of April and then they will vote. This a great
way for students to get to know new Canadian Authors.

Our grade 7 and 8 students are also running a student-led book club. This is an opportunity for the
students to rad the same novel and discuss it in a book club format. The club is open to any interested
grade 7 and 8 students, and meets every Wednesday during second break in the library. Mrs. Vallorani
loves this club because it highlights our student-led initiatives and it inspires the senior students to keep
on reading.

HDSBReads Author Event

Students and their families are invited to attend The HDSBReads Author Event on March 9, 2017 from
6:00 p.m.to 8:30 p.m. at Burlington Central High School Auditorium.

Author Lindsay Mattick will be talking about her book, Finding Winnie: the true story of the world's
most famous bear. Winnie was a real bear, rescued and trained by Captain Harry Colebourn (Lindsay's
great-grandfather) during World War 1. The bear cub went on to inspire author A.A. Milne's Winnie-
the-Pooh character. Students from JK to Grade 12 have read Finding Winnie (or had the book read to
them) as part of HDSBReads, an annual 'one-book, one board' program. Lindsay Mattick will also
autograph copies of her book, which will also be on sale (cash only).

In addition to the author, The Ontario Genealogical Society, and 3 veterans from the Friends of HMCS
Haida and Burl-Oak Naval Veterans and the Canadian War Museum Memorabilia Box will be there.
There will also be a t-shirt launcher, refreshments, a photo-op with Winnie the HDSBReads mascot, and
lots more.
The event is organized by a dedicated group of teacher-librarians, library technicians and Library
Services staff. Tickets are free and can be obtained on: Eventbrite.ca. We hope that you will join us for
an educational and fun evening.

Webequie First Nations Community Book Drive

The power of reading and books in a childs life is undeniable. Our leadership students, along with the
students at JWB, are joining together to collect new and gently used books for the Webequie First
Nations Community located in Northern Ontario. This community is fly-in only and lacks the resources
needed to develop the love of reading and further education among students who live there. The book
drive will be happening at JWB until Friday, February 10th. We will send the books off during the week
of Valentines Day. Thanks for your contributions JWB family and community.

School Councils Corner

Thank you to everyone who purchased Poinsettia's before the Holidays! Thanks to your generous
support, the sale of the Poinsettia's raised $750.

Dance a Thon
The DJ has been booked and the students are ready to dance! On February 14th students will be dancing
as hard as they can for the JWB Dance a Thon. Forms to sponsor students for the Dance a Thon will be
sent home at the beginning of February. All money raised will go towards
purchasing additional classroom resources.

Just a reminder about a few fundraisers that continue to run throughout the year and
summer.

QSP Magazines
Our Magazine fundraiser continues to run all year. Magazines can be purchased on
line at www.qsp.ca. A portion of any magazine purchased will be given back to JWB.
It's a great way if you're purchasing or renewing a subscription to contribute back to the school.

Mabels Labels
If you're ordering labels to label your kids clothes, water bottles or anything else, JWB is set up as a
fundraiser with Mabels Labels. When ordering through their website, click on support a fundraiser and
find JWB. A portion of all sales when JWB is selected will be given back to the school and continues to
run all year including the summer.

Our next School Council Meeting will be held on February 15, 2017 at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome
so if you're interested to find out what School Council is about please free to come to a meeting.

Kindergarten Registration

Junior Kindergarten 2017-2018: Child was born in 2013.

Senior Kindergarten 2017-2018: Child was born in 2012.

NOTE: If you child is currently attending one of our schools for Junior Kindergarten, you do not need
to register for Senior Kindergarten.

To determine your designated home school, access our school boards website at www.hdsb.ca and click
on School Information (school locator).

Please bring the following original documents with you to register:

Proof of residency via any two of the following current documents: lease or deed, car registration,
utility bill, residential telephone bill, moving bill, property tax bill, bank statement, credit card
statement, or correspondence with government agency.
Birth certificate, passport or baptismal certificate for your child.
Proof of immunization, or philosophical or religious exemption forms (an completed medical
authorization where necessary).

If you are not the childs parent, or if you have sole custody, plese bring proof of custody (court order).

Please ensure your child is registered by February 3rd, 2017.

Extended French for Students Currently in Grade 6 (English)

Extended French begins in Grade 7 and is offered at Sir E. MacMillan P.S. in Burlington. Students who
choose this program have 50 per cent of their instructional time in English and 50 percent in French.
Students complete Grade 7 and 8 at Sir E. MacMillan and bus transportation is not provided for this
program.

Registration forms were emailed home to parents of current grade 6 students in the English program.
They can also be found on the Boards website (www.hdsb.ca.).

Message from the Office

Thank you to all of our parents for using the Parent Portal to report student absences and appointment.
A reminder that same day absences have to be reported by 9:30 a.m. so that the report can be sent to us
for verification.

If you miss the 9:30 a.m. cut off and your child is absent, an automated call will go out to the telephone
numbers that you have provided to us. We ask that you respond to this call with the reason that fits the
absence. There is no reason to call the school as we will receive the report with the picked-up calls and
the reason.
If you are picking up your child from school early for an appointment, please be aware that we call
students down to the office when a parent arrives. We do not have them waiting in the office as they can
miss valuable class time if there is any delay in picking them up. Please give yourself a few extra
minutes so they can be signed out and called from the class when you arrive.

Please encourage your children to remember everything before they leave for school in the mornings.
We have numerous drop-offs with winter clothing, lunches, water bottles, homework, etc. We try not to
interrupt students during class time to pick up these items, but it can get more difficult to find them
during breaks.

Inclement Weather
With the wintry weather around the corner, we remind parents to be aware of the
following list of TV/Radio stations that advise of school closures and bus cancellations:
CHFI 98.1, CHML 900, CFRB 1010, CKOC 1150, CHWO 740, CJOY 1460, CING
95.3, CKFM 99.9, KLITE 102.9, Y 108, 107.9 FM, CBC 99.1, WAVE 94.7 and
CHTVs Morning Show. Please remember that if busses are cancelled in the
morning, they are cancelled for the whole day. If you choose to drive your child to
school on a day when transportation has been cancelled, you must pick up your child at 3:35 p.m.
