QUESTION5: Show that x(x + 1) (2x + 1) is a multiple of 6 for every natural number x

Solution :

Let Pndenote the statement X(X+ 1) (2X+ 1) is a multiple of 6.

When X=1, Pnbecomes 1(1 + 1) ((2)(1) + 1) = (1)(2)(3) = 6 is a multiple of 6.

This shows that the result is true for n = 1.
Assume that Pkis true for some kN.
That is assume that k(k + 1) (2k + 1) is a mutliple of 6.
Let k (k + 1)(2k + 1) = 6 m for some mN.
We now show that the truth of Pkimplies the truth of Pk+1, where Pk+1 is (k + 1)(k + 2) [2(k
+ 1) + 1] = (k + 1)(k + 2) (2k + 3) is a multiple of 6.
We have (k + 1) (k + 2) (2k + 3) = (k + 1) (k + 2) [(2k + 1) + 2]
= ( k+ 1) [k (2k + 1) + 2(2k+1) + 4)]
= ( k+ 1) [k (2k + 1) + 6 (k + 1)]
= k (k + 1) (2k + 1) + 6 (k + 1)2= 6m + 6 (k + 1)2
= 6[m + (k + 1)2]
Thus (k + 1) (k + 2) (2k + 3) is multiple of 6.

QUESTION6: Find the sum of the series 12+ 32+ 52+ . + (2n 1)2

Solution-

QUESTION7: If 1, , 2 are three cube roots of unity. Show that :

(2- )(2- 2)(2- 10)(2- 11)=49
Ans-
Since ,
10=(3)3
11=(3)32
Thus,
(2- )(2- 2) (2-(3)3) (2-(3)32)
(2- )(2- 2) (2- )(2- 2)
[(2- )(2- 2)]2
[4-2 2-2 +3]2
[4-2(2+ )+3]2
[4-2(-1)+1]2
[4+2+1]2
49=RHS
