Assignment 3

This document contains two questions regarding the diffusion of gases and liquids. Question 1 involves calculating the rate of diffusion and maximum depth of a packed bed for CO2 gas and NH3 gas. Question 2 involves determining the diffusivity and flux of glycerol diffusing in a water solution to develop a culture medium. The document provides parameters and conditions for calculating diffusion rates and fluxes over specified distances and temperatures for the different substances.

Assignment 3

QUESTION 1

a) It is desired to calculate the rate of diffusion of CO2 gas in air at steady state through a loosely
packed bed of sand at 276 K and a total pressure of 1.013 x 10 5 Pa. The bed depth is 1.25 m and
the void fraction is 0.30. The partial pressure of CO 2 is 2.026 x 103 Pa at the top of the bed and
0 Pa at the bottom. Use a of 1.87.

b) If the above question is repeated with the same diffusion rate, determine the maximum depth
of packed bed (in m) if the CO2 gas is replaced by NH3 at 25 oC.

QUESTION 2

Glycerol with formula structure of C3H8O3 is diffusing in water solution at 37 oC to develop

tryptone glucose yeast (TGY) in laboratory. In order to produce TGY with good performance,
6.02 wt% of agar gel was originally developed at 37 oC as a general medium for glycerol-water
solution.

a) Determine the diffusivity of the glycerol in the water solution.

b) Assuming no binding to the protein solution, calculate the flux (kgmol/m 2.s) of glycerol at 5
o
C if the amount of glycerol at point (1) and point (2) are 300 g mol/ m3 and 15 g mol/ m3,
respectively, and the distance is approximately 0.5 cm. (cp = 12 kg/m3)
