Parents are welcomed and strongly encouraged to attend the first team meeting, fitness test, and eat
dinner with the team on Wednesday August 25, 2010. Parents we would like you to feel like part of our
team, so please feel free to attend these first few events to cheer on your son or daughter and his or her
teammates.
Practice times Fall 2010: Please note we plan to practice from 6am to 8am this fall Monday through
Friday. Saturday we will practice in the morning and will start at either 8am or 9am depending on our
running location for that weekend. Sunday’s will always be a day off.
Move-in date: This year we will have you move-in during normal moving dates. The normal move-in date
this year in Wednesday August 25, 2010. In the past we moved-in early but because of the new NCAA Life
in Balance proposal and the conference, regional and national championships each being 2 weeks later than
normal we are going to have you move-in during the normal move-in date.
Information source: Please check the following website for updates and information throughout the
summer and the academic year. I strongly encourage you and your family and friends to add yourselves as
a follower of this website (Click on the “follow” link on right side of the page) so that I know you are
staying updated. I also encourage you to post comments or questions on new posts, and take part in the
interactive surveys that I will offer.

Location: This year we will travel to Wolverine Camps in Wolverine, Michigan. Wolverine is located
approximately 5 miles south of Indian River, MI. This will be LSSU’s first year at Wolverine Camps
however, I have had the opportunity to work camps at Wolverine for the past 8 years and I am very familiar
with the camp, the surrounding area, the running trails, and the various items to do at camp. While this new
camp will be new to many of you Wolverine has many advantages over Bay Cliff including: the running
and the trails in the area are better, there is a ice pond on camp property to ice our legs in, there are many
team activities we can do including: tubing down the Sturgeon River, a low ropes course, a high ropes
course, many challenge elements, a team challenge wall, and many other. The other benefits are we will
have the camp to our selves and will not have to share facilities and the camp is only 90 miles from
campus.
Women’s Walk: In its second year. This will be the cross country team’s first year participating in this
event. I encourage everyone to get their families and friends involved. The more funds you are able to raise
with this event the more equipment (shirts, apparel, shoes…etc) we can purchase for the team.
Information is available in your packet. It is also available online at:
http://www.lssulakers.com/information/women-s_walk
Golf Outing: another fundraiser occurring on the same day as the women’s walk. Student athlete’s are
again encouraged to get hole sponsors or golfers to participate in the event. Again, I encourage everyone to
get their families and friends involved. The more funds you are able to raise with this event the more
equipment (shirts, apparel, shoes…etc) we can purchase for the team.
Costs, transportation, and fundraisers: The university provides our cross country team with a budget
that pays for our travel costs for all away meets. Uniforms are also provided (they are checked out at the
beginning of each season). The only cost you will have as an athlete is for cross country camp if you
choose not to fundraise. If you reach above and beyond the minimum fundraiser levels this will enable me
to purchase cross country practice clothing such as sweatshirts, t-shirts, dri-fit shirts…etc. I am excited as
cross country athletes the only fundraisers you are involved with with be the Women’s walk and the gold
outing. Additionally the cross country team will receive the profits from the Turkey Trot and Cabin Fever
road races. I truly believe we can do some exciting things this fall!
Transportation: The team will provide transportation to all athletes that are cleared by the NCAA
Clearinghouse. Those not cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse will have to provide their own
transportation.
Physicals: Those who have not completed a physical will need to do so prior to the beginning of cross-
country camp. You can get a physical at home by your local doctor however; it needs to be completed on
the LSSU physical form.
Physical forms are available online please download and print the form if necessary:

everyone at Sherman Park after the fitness test.

Fitness Test: We will conduct our annual fitness test as always on the first day of the season to assess each
athlete’s fitness levels. This year our men’s team will complete 10 miles for time and our women’s team
will complete 10km for time. This year each true cross country athlete will finish the distance for time even
if they fall off pace. Please remember to be very diligent and consistent with your training this summer.
The fitness test is realistic for those who train appropriately. The fitness test as always will be conducted on
a 2km (1.25 mile) loop on the Algonquin Ski trails.
NCAA Clearinghouse: It is important for all incoming freshman to be cleared by the NCAA
Clearinghouse prior to arrival at cross-country camp. Athletes must be cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse
in order to travel with the team off campus as well as to compete. Therefore, it is critical that you take the
time to ensure that you are cleared before you arrive on campus and most certainly before we travel to
camp. Remember to send in your final transcripts after you graduate this spring and also please
remember to complete the amateurism portion with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Both portions need to be
completed before camp. The NCAA requires proof of graduation. Please contact the NCAA Clearinghouse
early for it can take several weeks to get cleared. Do not wait until the end of the summer!
