EXERCISE - 1

Installation of QGIS software in Computer

Step1: double click on QGIS exe file on desk top, QGIS installation window will
open, Click on Next

Step2: Click on Agree to accept the license agreement

Step 3: Select the location of installation (Default will be your C drive) click Next
Step4: Choose Component, Quantum GIS should be marked (next three boxes are
free datasets given by software manufacturer, if you want you can add, but computer
has to be connected with internet to download it) click on Install

Step5: Software started to install in your computer, be calm till it completes fully

Step 5A: During installation process the software also install MicroSoft Visual C++
2005 Redistributable, Be Calm till it complete
Step6: The software has been installed in your computer; Click Finish to complete
the installation process, then the system will restart.

The software has been successfully installed on your computer, you can see the
shortcut of QGIS software on your desktop.

EXERCISE - 2

Getting familiarization with Tools of QGIS

Step1: double click on shortcut of QGIS icon on desktop to open QGIS software

Step2: the software starts to open; be calm till it opens fully

Step3: the software has opened with help window, if you click on next the window
will show tips to work with it. Click OK, to begin work.
Step4: the window below shows the full window of QGIS with tool bars

EXERCISE - 3

Image Registration

Step1: click on Plugins go to Georeferencer click on Georeferencer

Step2: the new georeferencer window will be open, click on open raster

Open Raster Tool

Step3: open base map from its location click on Open


Step4: select WGS84 projection system from Coordinate reference system selector
window and click OK

Step5: the base map has been added to Georeferencer window, use zoom in, zoom out
and pan tools to see the details of base map.

Step6: Zoom-in on a known place to a maximum and then click Add point tool, and
then click on known point

Known Point
Step7: when you click your cursor on known points, the Enter map coordinates
window will open; now enter the X = Longitude, Y = Latitude values. (in the window
below: x is 76 38 59.48 and y is 12 17 53.33)

Step8: once you enter the value, give ok, and repeat the same procedure for all known
points on base map. (once you added the values in map coordinate window the values
will be saved in GCP table)
Step9: once you have entered all the seven points on base map, click on Start georeferencing,

Step10: Click OK on info window to set transformation type

Step11: select polynomial 1 transformation type and select location for output raster;
then give OK
Step12: once you have given OK, the system starts to process the data.

Step13: close the Georeferencer window; when you close it, the save GCPs window
will appear (if you want to, you can save it for future work) Otherwise click on
Discard.

Step14: now registered map will appear on map view (if not go-to Layers on main menu and click on
Add Raster Layer.., then open registered map)
Step15: click on Raster from menu bar go to projections then click on
Assign Projection)

Step16: select your registered image as Input file; then select WGS/UTM zone 43N from selecet desire SRS
window. Click OK on desire SRS window and click OK on Assign Projection window. then remove your map on
window

Step17: now open your reprojected Map by clicking on Layers, Add Raster Layers... ; then select WGS 84/
UTM zone 43N from Coordinate Reference System Selector

EXERCISE - 4

Vector Layer Creation

Step1: click on Layers from menu bar then go to New then click on New
Shapefile Layer

Step2: select Point, or Line or Polygon type on new vector layer window, Specify CRS will be taken
automatically based on your base map. In Name: Type the name of layer (i.e settlement, water bodies,
forest). Type: if you add a numerical value, select Whole numbers; if you add alphabetic letters, select
Text data, for the numerical value with decimal number, select Decimal number in type. then Click OK
Creation of Points

Step3: in Save As windows choose your folder and save your vector layer

Step4: once you saved your vector layer, it will be added to legend window

Step5: click on layer (it will highlight in blue color) and click on Toggle editing (now
the layer is in editable mode), then click on Capture point. Then click on a some
builtings on base map.

Step6: Attributes window will be open when you click on base map, enter the id value (i.e. 1) and
click OK

Step7: create necessary points from your base map, and once you finished creating
points, click on Toggle editing tool, it will stop the layer from editable mode, click on
Save to save your work in layer

Creation of Line
Step8: click on Layers from menu bar then go to New then click on New
Shapefile Layer (same as step:1)
Step9: select line from Type, enter the name of column on Name box and type is
whole number, then click OK

Step10: save the layer in a folder.

Step11: click on layer (it will highlight in blue color) and click on Toggle editing
(now the layer is in editable mode), then click on Capture line. Then click on a road
on base map.

Step12: just single click on road to continue till destination place, just right click on
mouse to complete the line. use key board arrows to move the base map while digitize.
Once you complete line, enter id and click on OK

Step13: digitize necessary lines from your base map, once you are finished creating
lines, click on Toggle editing tool, it will stop the layer from editable mode, click on
Save to save your work in layer (same as Step:7)

Creating Polygon
Step14: click on Layers from menu bar; then go to New; then click on New
Shapefile Layer (same as step:1 and step:8)
Step15: select Polygon from Type, enter the name of column on Name box and Type
is Whole numbers, then click OK

Step16: save the layer in your folder.

Step17: click on layer (it will highlight in blue color) and click on Toggle editing
(now the layer is in editable mode), then click on Capture polygon. Then click on a
base map to capture polygon feature.

Step18: just single click on corner of any building and continue till you reach starting
point, just right click on mouse to complete the polygon. Once you complete polygon
enter id and click OK

Step19: create necessary polygons from your base map, once you finished creating
polygons, click on Toggle editing tool, it will stop the layer from editable mode, click
on Save to save your work in layer (same as Step:7 and Step:13)

Step20: after completing all your work, go to file save project save it in your
folder.

EXERCISE - 5

Attribute Layer Management and Query

In exercise 4 we studied how to create vector layers; based on the same method, the
buildings boundary have been created and saved in your folder in the name of
"buildings"

Step1: to open vector layer , click on Layer in menu bar, then click on Add Vector
Layer

Step2: once you clicked on Add Vector Layer window will be open, on it select File
option, in encoding column select UTF-8, then click browse to select the file from its
location.
Step3: select a file from its location and click OK, then click Open on Add Vector
Layer window.

Step4: once you click on open the shapefile (vector layer) of a buildings, it will open
on your map view. Right click on layer from legend window, then click Open attribute
table to open its attribute table.

Step5: once you clicked on it, the attribute table window will open, on that you can
see the data and the tool bar

Step6: Create New Column: to create a new column, click on "Toggle edit mode" (1), then click on
"new column" (2).

Step7: Add columns window will appear, enter name as "Bld_type"; type
as "Text (strings); width is 20 and click on OK.

Step8: in the new column, write commercial for huge buildings and residencial for
smallar buildings (just an assumption, need not to be accurate)

Step9: After adding the bld_Types, click on Advance search


Step10: the new window "Search query builder" will open. To create a query to select
only the residential from the table, click on Bld_type (1) from fileds box, then click '='
sign (2) from Operators, then click on all (3) under the velues, then click on the
Residential in values box (4). finally click on OK (5)

Step11: Now the software selects only the rows contains residential in table and
polygons in the vector data, as shown below.

Step12: Create two new columns one for name of the building owner, and another one for Number of floors
in that building. Name of owner column type is string and number of floor column type is whole number.
After this use Advance search option to get meaningful answers.

EXERCISE - 6
Creating Thematic Map

Step:1 the thematic map can be created using a vector layer once the necessary data
have been added to attribute table. Right click on layer from legend window and click
on properties

Step:2 layer properties window will open when you click on properties, on the
window click on style, then change the type from single symbol to Categorized,

Step:3 on Column option, select Bld_type; then click on classify button and click OK.
Step:4 once you click on OK, the thematic map will be created on map window; the
color and range can be modified if necessary.
Map Composer
Step1: create thematic map on your map window, click on File on menu bar and
click New Print Composer

Step2: composer window will open when you click New Print Composer on File
option. 1) click on add new map tool and draw a rectangle on map window. Once
you complete the rectangle, your thematic map will be displayed on it.

Step3: add legend using Add new vect legend tool, add scale bar using Add new
scalebar tool and add North arrow using Add arrow tool
Step4: to export the finished map go to File and click on Export to Image option
and select your location then save it.
