Bending Test Data Sheet Sec 5

The document provides experimental data from strain gauges on a beam under different loads. It includes: - Strain gauge readings for axial and lateral strains under increasing loads. - Instructions to plot axial vs lateral strain to determine Poisson's ratio, and plot strain vs gauge location to find the neutral axis. - An equation relating load, deflection, modulus of elasticity, and beam properties to calculate E from the slope. - A second experiment's data for a simply supported beam under pure bending, with an equation to determine E from the slope of a load-deflection curve.

Part one: strain measurements

General Information

Strain gauges 3, 4, and 5 are in the tension side while Strain gauges 6 and 7 are in the compression
side.

Second moment of area (I) for the beam is = 5.6696810-8 m4.

You can find all the information about the beam and the strain gauge locations in the attached .pdf
file called Beam model.pdf.

Questions

(1) Make a plot between 1 (axial strain) and 2 (lateral strain) in order to find Poissons ratio
from the slope of the figure (use curve fitting).

(2) Determine neutral axis location by drawing a figure between the location of strain gauges on
the steel beam (Y-axis) and strain values for each value of load (X-axis) so that the location of the
experimental neutral axis is approximately determined by its distance from the Y-axis.

(3) Calculate modulus of elasticity for the beam by calculating the slope for each line from the
previous part (2) (use curve fitting), and make average for all reading. Use this relation:

8EI

PL
L= 0.8 m
I= 5.66968E-08 m^4

Part 2 (Pure Bending):

From this part, calculate the young modulus for steel

a = 20 cm

L= 120 cm

I = 5.41968x10-10 m4

Find the results in the attached for each group.

The equation for this kind of beams is determined by:

24 E I
P *
a (3L2 4 * a 2 )
- Draw a figure between P in (N) and in (m) then find E from the slope of the curve and the
above equation.
