CE512 Structural Dynamics Assignment # 1, due Wednesday January 16th

1- Determine the natural frequency of a weight w suspended from a spring at the midpoint of a
simply supported beam Fig. 1. The length of the beam is L, and its flexural rigidity is EI. The
spring stiffness is k. assume the beam to be massless.

Fig. 1
2- Derive the equation of motion for the frame shown in Fig. 2. The flexural rigidity of the beam and
columns is as noted. The mass lamped at the beam is m; otherwise, assume the frame to be
massless and neglect damping.

Fig. 2
3- Derive the differential equation of motion of the weight w suspended from a spring at the free end
of a cantilever concrete beam (Fig. 3). Neglect the mass of the beam and spring. Determine the
natural frequency and period of vibration for a weight of 50 Ibs.

4- Write the differential equation of motion for the inverted pendulum shown in Fig. 4 and determine
its natural frequency. Assume small oscillations and neglect the mass of the rod.
