Lap Report

The document summarizes a student science project that aimed to determine the ideal ratio of baking soda and vinegar needed to launch a rocket the furthest distance. The students constructed rockets out of plastic bottles and added wings for stability. They then experimented with different ratios of baking soda and vinegar to produce enough carbon dioxide gas to launch the rocket. Their best result was launching a rocket 15 meters using a ratio of 300mL of vinegar and 28 grams of baking soda. However, various factors like wind and wing design affected stability and prevented the rocket from hitting the target. The students concluded more experimentation was needed to optimize the gas production and rocket design.

Chemistry Project written by WOO! group

OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this project is to determine the exact ratio of baking
soda and vinegar in order to launch the rocket and hit the target.

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION

In this experiment we use a chemical In this project, the rocket was launched by
reaction between baking soda and acid and base. The reaction between
vinegar to create a force to move base(NaHCO3 or baking soda) and
rocket forward. In each chemical acid(CH3COOH or vinegar) creates gas
bonding create difference substance, (CO2(Carbon-Dioxide)). This gas is what

rocket to hit the target.

Materials
1. 1L Plastic Bottle
2. Tape
3. Baking Soda
4. Vinegar
5. Painting Spray
6. Pipe
7. Flute board
8. Rubber cork

Method
Before beginning the project, make sure to prepare the materials for making rocket.
Using a paper to sketch the wings and place it onto the flute board. Carefully, cut the
wings out. Then, stick the wings to the water bottle equally onto the bottle. By placing
it unequally can cause to the failure in launching the rocket. Next, cut a half circle on a
cardstock and roll it to create a cone-like tip of the rocket. Stick it to the bottom of
the bottle. The last step of making the rocket is to decorate it.
Next, in order to launch the rocket to hit the target, the launcher is required.
Without it, the rocket will not be able to fly in the preferred direction and will not be
able to hit the target.
For the launching process, first, prepare the baking soda, vinegar, and measuring
equipments. Measure the preferred amount of baking soda and vinegar then record the
date. It is recommended to record the data in order to know how much more or less
the chemical should be used to hit the goal. Next, fill the bottle with the measured
vinegar. Put the baking soda flatly onto the tissue, roll it, and tape the top and end part.
This will help slowing down the chemical reaction process. Place the rolled tissue into
the bottle. Immediately, put on the rubber cork then flip the rocket over and place onto
the launcher.

Making Launcher
Method
1. Cut a pipe into 3 different lengths. 5 of 30 cm pipe, 2 of 14 cm
pipe and 1 of 8 cm pipe. So the totals of the pipe are 8.
2. Connect 3 of the 30 cm pipe together by using curved pipe.
3. Connect 2 of the 14 cm pipe at the reminding space.
4. Then attach 2 three way pipe at both of 14 cm pipe.
5. There will still a gap between 2 three way pipe and it will be
unsteady. Use 8 cm pipe connect it to reduce the gap.
6. Sticks 2 of 30 cm pipe on top of three way pipe.
7. Paint the launcher with black, dark blue, white and silver
spray to make it look like the galaxy.

CALCULATION
NaHCO3 + CH3COOH -----> C2H3OONa + H2O + CO2
10 grams 25grams 4% by mass

10grams of NaHCO3 x 1 mol of NaHCO3/ 84 grams of NaHCO3 = 0.12 mol of NaHCO3

0.12 mol of NaHCO3 x 1 mol of CO2/ 1 mol of NaHCO3 = 01.2 mol of CO2
0.12 mol of CO2 x 22.4 liters of CO2/ 1 mol of CO2 = 2.69 liters of CO2

25 gram of CH3COOH x 1 mol of CH3COOH/ 60 grams of CH3COOH =0.04 mol of

CH3COOH
0.04 mol of CH3COOH x 1 mol of CO2/ 1 mol of CH3COOH = 0.04 mol of CO2
0.04 mol of CO2 x 22.4 liters of CO2/ 1 mol of CO2 = 0.90 liters of CO2
CH3COOH is the limiting agent.
Analysis
The trial that our rocket is almost hit
the target is when we use 300 mL of
vinegar and 28 grams of baking soda.
Since there is more gas that take up
space which produce more pressure and
make the the rocket go further than
other trial.
To conclude the amount of 300mL of
vinegar and 28 grams of baking are the
best condition in this experiment
At first our rocket is so light which
make the rocket sway too much in the
air, so we add more weight by adding
Considering that pressure from the gas
should be more concern
There are so many factor that affected
the rocket: wind, chemical, wing of the
rocket, and etc.

Eror
The curve of the wings make the
rocket sway too much in the air and
not go straight directly towards the
target (did not askew but stay long
time in the air).
The chemical are not enough to
produce enough gas in order to
make the rocket reached the target
Some trial that we have not enough
equipment to plug the bottle the
chemical leak out
We change the weight of the rocket
Our angle seem to be unstable

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the rocket can be launched and hit the target by using the simplest
ratio of the base and acid. The pressure in the rocket makes the rubber pops out
and the gas inside determine the amount of pressure which will result in the
distance of rocket launched. In addition, there are also some other external
factors, for example, the wings of the rocket, the wind direction, etc. Our rocket's
launching result consider to be failed. We can make it to go straight but we
cannot stop it from being sway too long in the air because of wings and wind. By
using fit amount of vinegar and baking soda in order to produce lots of gas
enable the rocket to launch longer by the pressure that take up all the space in
the bottle which make the rocket go further. The nearest number of the rocket
that almost hit the target which 20 metre the longest distance that we can make
is 15 metres with 300 mL of vinegar and 28 grams of baking soda.
