A Summary of Teaching Teachers to Assess

In the article Teaching Teachers to Assess by John Eggleston talked about how important

is the assessment in class. John Eggleston argued that the formal way of evaluation in education

is the assessment. Assessments are the best strategies to evaluate the students knowledge.

Moreover, every education system should have the assessments due to the curriculum.

Assessments are one of the keys frame that teachers use to push their students knowledge

forward and it is never to an end.

The objectives of assessments are pupils effective teaching and mastery of learning.

Assessments help students to be more extrinsic rather than intrinsic and help the students to

develop their self-assessment. Students need assessments to train their capacity of knowledge to

get to the level that they need to be. For example, students in grade 5 need to take final exams so

they can enter grade 6.

The teachers need to assess the students fairly according to the lesson or abilities that

students can reach. The teachers should be assessing the students that they are teaching and also

assess themselves. According to the article, there are five of keys strategies to assess the students.

First, is the evaluating the results of teaching which mean the teachers should ask oral questions

while they are teaching so to make sure if their students understand or get what the lesson is

about? Moreover, teachers should encourage the students to have the confidence to raise up their

hand and share what they learn. However, the teachers should not rebuke the students when they

gave the wrong answers. Secondly, is the enabling children to assess their achievements, that

mean the teachers must mark and gives the grade to the student's works and their achievements.

Thirdly, is the diagnose of learning difficulties. At this point, the teachers need to give the

students exams to check their learning difficulties and then help them reach the learning

achievements. Fourth, is being accountable and reporting achievement. The teachers need to

know the to manage the students learning differentiation and help them to stay on the same road

as the others. Reporting to their students of what they have achieved and need to achieve help the

students reach the goal. Lastly, the teachers can use assessments to negotiate to the school,

parents and their students about the students knowledge and how far they have learned.

Evaluation

From what I understand about this article is that assessments are one of the key role that

teachers must have toward their students to see where their students knowledge are. I learned

that oral questions in class while teaching are very helpful to see if the students are learning or

not and to see if the students are interest in the lesson or not. Moreover, oral questions are very

effective to teachers because they can make the class run well and make the students interact

with their teachers. Secondly, I learned that exams help the teachers to diagnose the problems

that their students have and they both need to work on it so they can do better next time. Lastly, I

learned that with these five keys of strategies to assess the students make the teachers to achieve

their goal in teaching. I can assure that if the teachers assessed their students well the knowledge

of the students will also increase and their learning abilities reach to the next level of learning.
