3.PART DISCRIPTION
a) New pole part design
In the MACB circuit breaker pole parts in which the maintenance - free vacuum interrupter forms
a positive unit together with the entire pole part are used for the first time. This is achieved by a
specially developed embedding technology in which the vacuum interrupter is directly potted in
epoxy resin to form a pole part .External influences on the switching element are therefore
extensively precluded.
b) MAGNETIC ACUATOR
The heart of the electro magnetically operated mechanism with the switching latching and release
functions.
c) ELECTRONIC CONTROLLER:
Electronic controller of release, operating motion, energy storage and functional reliability.
d) CAPACITOR
Electrical energy stored for a complete autoreclosing cycle.

VCB With Magnetic Actuator Mechanism
4.1 General:
This is the latest innovative operating mechanism technology with the following salient features:
Force generated by magnetic actuator
latching by magnetic actuator
Release by magnetic actuator
No parts subjected to wear
Maintenance free as a standard feature.
All the operating mechanism functions are integrated with the magnetic actuator. The magnetic
Actuator provides perfectly suitable travel time and force travel characteristics for vacuum switching
devices.

1.2 Operating principle:
The actuator is a bi-stable magnet system in which switching of the armature to the relevant limit position
is effected but the magnetic field of two electrically excited coils. The field of two permanent magnets
holds the magnetically in the positions. Switching operations are released by excitation of one of the coils
until the retaining force of the permanent magnet is exceeded. The auto reclosure can then be opened by
the standard emergency manual operating system. The magnetic actuator is designed in such a way that,
the armature can act directly via the lever on the main shaft, on the moving contact of the vacuum
interrupter. With this method of actuating force generation and transmission, there is no wear of the
mechanism. Maintenance up to extremely high numbers of operating cycles is simple a thing of the past.
1.3 Conclusion and operation
The magnetic actuator used in the VCB type MSMA-L uses a laminated yoke structure to facilitate the
permanent magnet to hold the structure in the end positions. A pair of electromagnetic coil is used to
drive the armature between the two end positions. The temporary application of current of appropriate
polarity in the upper coil will cause a high flux to be forced across the upper air gap, providing an upward
motive force on the armature in order to close the air gap. As the flux induced by coil is greater than the
flux present in the lower part of the magnetic circuit, the armature will be flipped to the upper position,
which corresponds to the upper limit position of the actuator. The armature will be held in that position by
the magnetic flux provided by the permanent magnet.

In the similar manner, if the lower coil is energized, the magnetic flux in the lower part will be increased
and the armature will be moved to the lower position, which corresponds to the lower end position of the
actuator. The energizing current to the coil is supplied from a capacitor unit, which is charged by an
electronic unit. When the armature reaches the end position, the limit switch sense that and gives signal to
the electronic unit to stop the discharge from the capacitor. The electronic circuit consists of an AC/DC
converter and gives a constant output voltage to charge the capacitor irrespective of the input supply
voltage. It also includes a control unit that monitors all the function of the auto reclosures. The energy
stored in the capacitor not only provides the necessary coil energy, but also ensures power supply to the
electronic circuit.

Clean the all parts.
Connect controls thro plug & socket.
Operate the VCB 5 times for close & open in test position.
before rack- in into service position, ensure the 12 KV supply is off &earthed.
Rack the VCB in to service position & see the moving & fixing contacts are
Engaged properly.
Measure the contact resistance value at fixed contacts of panel it should be less
Than 100 micro ohms.

Measure IR value across VI in off condition & live points to earth by using 2.5kv
meggar it should be above 50 meggar ohms.
If all above are satisfactory the breaker can be charged
7. MAINTENANCE:
7.1 GENERAL
The vacuum circuit breaker requires little maintenance. Only parts subject to normal wear and
ageing need be serviced to ensure fully reliable operation. The intervals at which maintenance
should be carried out and amount of work involved depends upon number of short circuit
interruption, switching frequency and actual service conditions.
The service intervals indicated below are only approximate and should be adjusted to suit the
particular operating conditions. Under conditions the vacuum interrupter need not be serviced. The
maximum permissible contact wear is 2mm.
7.2 INSPECTION SCHEDULE:
Once a year, a general inspection should be carried out and if necessary the insulating parts
should be cleaned. More frequent checks may be necessary if the breakers are installed in a dust-
laden atmosphere.
Vacuum Interrupters:
They need replacement after 30,000 mechanical operations or when contacts have eroded by
maximum amount and the erosion. For guide, following No .of operations are given for life of
interrupter:
At 25kA -100 Nos
At 1250A -30000 Nos
CAUTION:
Before starting any on breaker, isolate the breaker .Disconnect the auxiliary supply. Inspections and
repairs should be carried out by qualified personnel who are familiar with switchgear of this type.
