Assignment part 2
In the accounting discourse community, there are diverse group
of people make up the community, such as students like me who are
undergraduate and major in related areamanagerial economics,
teacher assistant in school who are pursuing their master degree,
professor in accounting courses, advisors in major department, and
accountants who work in the firms. In addition, people who are
interested in accounting discourse community also make up the
community.
Here in UC Davis, we have an accounting club on campus which
is Davis Accounting Society(DAS). This is a group of students who are
involved in the community. According to their website Davis
Accounting Society, DAS is a business organization on campus which
will give members different kinds of accounting resources, and help
them to be successful in the business world. This accounting club will
host several workshops each quarter which will improve members
professional skills, such as networking, resume and cover letter writing.
In addition, they also have guest speakers from different firms come to
the meetings. They have a Facebook page, which is one of the ways
they communicate information. Other than that, they also have
meetings and presentations throughout the quarter. Those are good
ways for mind-liked students to meet each other and communicate.
Generally, in this club which is part of this discourse community, their
genres are PowerPoint, meetings, and etc. I am really looking forward
to join this club since I might get many information from this society
which will help with my understanding of this discourse community and
career field. I can have the chance to meet the guest speakers and get
to know different aspect of accounting.
Besides getting to know the accounting club in Davis, I also want
to talk to some expert in the discourse community so that I can really
see how people work in this field and how they communicate in this
field. Accountants who work for a firm are also involved in the
community. I interviewed a CPA named Jian Zhu, who works in public
accounting and is a Senior Tax Accountant at Seiler LLP. He told me
that there are formal and informal ways of communication with
different people in the office. You can call your co-workers extension to
talk with them. Email, chat, and text message are the main forms of
communication. However, he told me that the way they communicate
is depends on ones preference and your comfort level. For genres,
they dont have to write a lot of formal papers, instead, they have to
prepare different kinds of financial statements. According to my
textbook, Financial Accounting: Information for Decision (Wild), there
are some financial statements prepared from the analysis of business
transactions, such as income statement, statement of retained
earnings, balance sheet, statement of cash flows, and statement of
changes in stockholders equity. Financial statements also are the ways
for accountants to provide information to their clients, so that their
clients have clear understanding about how their company perform
during a period of time.
By recognizing what groups of people are involved in the
community help me have better understanding of how to find out
resources for my research and benefit my education and future career.
Cover memo
For the assignment part 2, I still dont know what kind of mode
will I use for this project. I have questions about the differences among
these three parts of assignment because I felt like part 1 and 2 of this
assignment will be included in part 3, then the content might be
repetitive.
I was not sure about should I write about the analysis of my
interview transcription or should I analysis of the people who make up
the community one by one since my interviewer also a person who
make up and is involved in this discourse community. Moreover, we
have to write about the methods they use for communicating
information, so is writing about my interviewer a good source to
support my analysis?
