Two Pinned Arch

This document provides instructions for an experiment to determine how the horizontal reactions at supports A and B of a two-pinned arch are affected by the position of a fixed load moving across the arch. A 500g mass is hung from the arch at various distances from support A. The forcemeter reading and theoretical horizontal reaction are recorded for each position in a table. A graph is then plotted to show the relationship between the horizontal reaction and load position. Analysis is done to determine where on the arch the load would cause the maximum horizontal reaction. Comments are made about the results and calculation of experimental error.

Experiment 6: A Point Load Moving Across a Two-

Pinned Arch

6.1 Aim

To find out how a fixed load at various positions across the arch affects the
horizontal reactions.

6. 2 Apparatus

Digital Force Display.

6. 3 Theory
Civil Engineering Department Structural Lab

:You will need the following formula to analyze the results

5Wx 3 3
HB= 3
( L + x +2 L x 2)
8r L

Where:
HB = Horizontal reaction at B (N)
W = Load (N) = (500g = 4.90N)
L = Span of the arch = 500 m
x = Distance from left-hand side (m)
r = Rise of the arch = 100 m

6.4 Results
- Record the forcemeter reading at each position in Table 1.
- Calculate the theoretical horizontal reaction for each position.
- Plot a graph of Theoretical horizontal reaction against distance from H A.
- What is the relationship between the horizontal reaction and the load?
Where would you place a load to achieve the maximum horizontal
reaction?
- Comment on your results and calculate the error.
