A Study on Learning Disability Among High School Students

ABSTRACT

A survey was conducted to find out learning disability in students. The survey was
conducted among students of standard VII of Rev. Fr. G.M.H.S Karikode. The total
number of students in the class were 28. The types of learning disabilities among students
are dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. Most of the students are affecting from
dyscalculia. One of the reasons for the dyscalculia is the improper care from the part of
the teachers at early stage.

INTRODUCTION

A disorder in the basic cognitive and psychological processes involved in using

language or performing mathematical calculations, affecting personsof normal intelligen
ce and not the result of emotional disturbance orimpairment of sight or hearing. Learning
disabilities are neurological differences in processing information that severely limit a
person's ability to learn in a specific skill area. That is, these disorders are the result of
actual differences in the way the brain processes, understands, and uses information.
Everyone has differences in learning abilities, but people with learning disabilities have
severe problems that persist throughout their lives. There is no "cure" for learning
disabilities. Special education programs can help people cope and compensate for these
disorders, but the learning disability will last a lifetime. Learning disabled
people may have difficulty in school or on the job. These disabilities may also impact
independent living and social relationships.
Learning disabilities are usually first noticed when children begin to fail in
school. Parents and preschool teachers are often the first to see early signs of learning
disabilities. Children may have difficulty learning basic skills in reading or understanding
reading. Difficulty writing, math, or language may also signal a problem. Some students
may easily learn basic skills but have difficulty applying skills in problem solving or
higher level school work. Students with learning disabilities will also have individual
education programs developed to address their needs.

Children who qualify as learning disabled are supported with specially designed
instruction based on each child's unique strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles.
Learning disabilities are believed to be caused by neurological differences in the way the
brain processes information. Simply put, a person has a learning disability when his
ability to learn an academic area is much lower than expected for his level of intelligence.
It is a common misconception about learning disabilities that people who have them
cannot learn or are less intelligent than their peers. Actually, this is not the case. People
with learning disabilities are actually as intelligent as their peers. In fact, it is even
possible to have a learning disability and be gifted as well. The actual difference is that
people with learning disabilities learn differently and may need a variety of instructional
practices to learn effectively.

In the diagnosis of learning disabilities, the discrepancy is usually determined

through assessment to determine the child's intelligence quotient, or IQ score, and
his achievement test scores in specific academic areas of reading, math, and written
language. Language processing, listening comprehension, and oral expression may also
be assessed.

A complete review of the student's educational history is conducted to rule out

other possible explanations for the difference in skill development and IQ before a
learning disability is diagnosed. Early detection and intervention for learning disabilities
are critical. If you suspect your child has a learning problem, find out how to recognize
common signs of or a potential disability.

TYPES OF LEARNING DISABILITY

Dyscalculia

A specific learning disability that affects a persons ability to understand numbers

and learn math facts. Individuals with this type of LD may also have poor comprehension
of math symbols, may struggle with memorizing and organizing numbers, have difficulty
telling time, or have trouble with counting.

Dysgraphia

A specific learning disability that affects a persons handwriting ability

and fine motor skills. Problems may include illegible handwriting, inconsistent
spacing, poor spatial planning on paper, poor spelling, and difficulty
composing writing as well as thinking and writing at the same time.

Dyslexia

A specific learning disability that affects reading and related language-based

processing skills. The severity can differ in each individual but can affect reading fluency,
decoding, reading comprehension, recall, writing, spelling, and sometimes speech and
can exist along with other related disorders. Dyslexia is sometimes referred to as a
Language-Based Learning Disability.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE

Exceptional children are those who deviate significantly from normal ones. The
learning disabled is a type of exceptional children. The study about learning disabled
children will help:-

1. To identify the learning disabled students in the class.

2. To give educational assistance at the correct time.

3. To provide motivation in learning.

4. To find out the area of difficulty.

5. To find out the extent to which students are learning disabled.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The present survey is conducted on the Rev. Fr. Gevarghese Memorial High
school karikode. This is conducted as a part of our school induction. The investigators
aim is to find out the learning disabilities among the students in class VIII B of the
school. Learning disability is a major problem the at the school student faces today.
Learning disability refers to a mixed group of disorder manifested by significant
difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, writing, reasoning, or
mathematical ability. Learning disability should be eliminated from the school students.
Sufficient remedial measures should be taken by the school management to do this. So
this study has relevance in the present educational system.

OBJECTIVES
The main objectives of the study include:
1. To find out the number of student affecting from dyscalculia in a class.
2. To get an overall idea about the number of students needs special education or
service.
3. To suggest remedial measures to avoid dyscalculia in students.
4. To find out the reason for observation of dyscalculia in students.
5. To make awareness in teachers, about the after effect of learning disability in
students.

HYPOTHESIS OF THE STUDY

The following are the hypothesis formulated for the study are:
Learning disabled children differ from normal children in mathematical ability.
Learning disabled children are deficient in attention compared to normal children.
Learning disability is related to certain socio-demographic factors.
Learning disabled children differ among themselves in specific deficiencies.
Major problem that school student faces may be in multiplication.

LEARNING DISABILITY TOOL SURVEY

Name of the student:

Std and Div:

Location:

Learning disabilities affect different people in different ways. Learning disabled

individuals often have difficulties remembering, understanding and expressing
information. They are often weak in at least one of the following areas;

Spelling
Written expression
Math computation
Reading comprehension
Problem solving
Organizational ability
Time management

SL. STATEMENT ALWAYS SOMETIMES NEVER

NO:
1 I learn class materials slower than I would
like.
2 I spend more time studying than my
classmates do.
3 I have poor memory.
4 Spelling is hard for me.
5 I cannot find the mistakes in my written
works by myself.
6 Even when I know what I want to say I have
difficulty expressing ideas in writing.
7 I have difficulty saying unfamiliar words
correctly while I am reading.
8 I have difficulty understanding and
remembering what I read.
9 I make errors in remembering basic math
facts.
10 I have difficulty solving math word
problems.
11 I have difficulty using the right word when I
explain my ideas to someone.
12 I have co-ordination problems.

FINDINGS

Students are having various problems in learning

Dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia can be seen in the students.
Students are not getting enough attention and care.
Students who have learning problems show strange behavior patterns
according to others.

SUGGESTION

Proper guidance must be given to students.

Special classes should be arranged in school.
Parents and teachers should take initiative to help the students to
overcome their problems in learning.
Interactive activities should be conducted to enhance the students
performances and also communication with their peers.

CONCLUSION
Learning disabilities include a number of disorders that affect childrens
ability to learn. This survey reveals that the students suffering from learning
disability have a lot of problems with the reading, writing and calculation
activities. These students are hyperactive too. This will affect the whole classroom
environment. Therefore, the identification of these students is necessary to guide
them properly and make a better classroom environment. By identifying these
students, the teacher can not only them but also the whole class.
