Simply Supported Beam Designed According To BS8100

A simply supported beam with 8m span is required to sustain characteristic dead

load of 20kN/m and imposed live load of 10 kN/m on the whole span.

Construction material consists of grade C30 ( = 30 N/mm2) and high

strength steel ( = 460 N/mm2) and mild steel for link ( = 250 N/mm2).
Exposure condition for the beam is mild and 1.5 hours for fire resistance.

Find out the following requirement based on BS8110, 1997:

1) Beam Size
2) Nominal cover
3) Main reinforcement
4) Shear link
5) Deflection
6) Cracking
7) detailing

2. Beam size

Assuming Bar = 16 mm
Link = 6 mm Bar = 16 mm
Link = 6 mm

Calculate the effective depth, d

Take h as 600 mm
h = 600 mm
b = 125 mm

3. Loading
a) Dead load
- S/W of beam =
- Dead load = 5 kN/m

Total dead load = 1.8+5= 6.8 kN/m

DL = 22.4 kN/m
b) Live load
Imposed live load = 10 kN/m
LL = 10 kN/m
Ultimate load, = 1.4x22.4 + 1.6x10
= 47.36 kN/m

= 47.36 kN/m
