Undoubtedly, authors tend to portrait several aspects of real life through their
plays in order to help readers feel recognized and identified. Subjects of
everyday life as love, treason, friendship, or jealousy are included in the stories
we are able to read everywhere. The purpose of this essay is to compare two
very well know stories: 12 years a slave and The Great Gatsby. The tree
main topics that will be taken into account in order to make the comparison are
hope, treason and friendship.
First of all, a remarkable subject that is present in both stories is the idea of
hope. In 12 years a slave, hope is present in the main protagonists actions,
full of faith and courage, with the only aim of recovering his freedom and
family. On the other hand, we have The Great Gatsby vision of hope. Gatsby,
full of expectations, builds a great fortune in order to get back the women he
loves, taking the green light shining just next to her house (green color is used
to symbolize hope in this story) as a motivation to go on with his enterprise
Last but not least, strong and powerful the image of friendship appears. The
close and strong relationship born between Solomon and Patsy during their
cruel slavery in 12 years Slave could be certainly compared to the complicity
and brotherhood got by Gatsby and Nick, Gatsbys best and only friend.
Good job!
