Chapter 15 Magnetic Circuits

This document provides worked solutions to questions from a chapter on magnetic circuits. It includes: 1) Calculating the reluctance and current in a mild steel ring winding. 2) Calculating the reluctance of a ferromagnetic ring and air gap. 3) Finding the magnetic field strength, flux density, and relative permeability of a ring. 4) Determining relative permeability from a B-H curve at different flux densities and field strengths.

CHAPTER 15: MAGNETIC CIRCUITS

WORKED SOLUTIONS
(These answers might differ slightly from those given in original questions due to
rounding off of numbers)

Question 1:

The reluctance, Rm, of the mild-steel ring:

l (400 103 )
Rm = = = 1.68 MA/Wb (Answer a.)
0 r A (4 107 ) 380 (500 106 )

Next, we can use Ohms Law for magnetic circuits to determine the current in the
winding:
mmf IN
Rm = =

R (1.68 106 ) 200
so, I = m = = 0.42 A (Answer b.)
N 800 106

Question 3:

For the ferromagnetic ring:

l d (100 103 )
Rm = = =  333 kA/Wb (Answer a.)
0 r A 0 r A (4 107 ) 2500 (300 106 )

For the air gap:

l d (1103 )
Rm = = =  2.65 MA/Wb (Answer b.)
0 r A 0 1 A (4 107 ) (300 106 )

Question 5:

Start by finding the magnetic field strength, H, of the ring:

mmf IN 2 480
H= = = = 800 A/m
l l 1200 103

Next, we find the flux density, B:

1 103
B= = = 12.5 T
A 80 106

Now, we can find the relative permeability from:

B
0 r =
H
B 12.5
so, r = =  12440 (Answer)
0 H (4 107 ) 800

Question 8:

(a) From the B-H curve supplied, the magnetic field strength (H) at a flux density (B)
of 0.4 T, is: 1500 A/m.
B
Since 0 r =
H
B 0.4
then r = =  212 (Answer a.)
0 H (4 107 ) 1500

(b) From the B-H curve supplied, the magnetic field strength (H) at a flux density (B)
of 0.8 T, is: 7000 A/m.
B
Since 0 r =
H
B 0.8
then r = =  91 (Answer b.)
0 H (4 107 ) 7000

(c) From the B-H curve supplied, the flux density (B) at a magnetic field strength (H)
of 4500 A/m, is: 0.7 T.
B
Since 0 r =
H
B 0.7
then r = =  124 (Answer c.)
0 H (4 107 ) 4500
