READ ME FIRST (A SYNOPSIS OF THE USER MANUAL)

RNB100 Tablet
Thank you for choosing this Rugged Notebook Tablet. Please read this information carefully.

1. The complete user’s manual is located on the Windows desktop as a shortcut. Please look for an Adobe™ PDF format file named
“RNB100 Tablet User’s Manual”. What follows is a synopsis of what Rugged Notebooks feels, are the most commonly asked
questions and cautions, every user should know about properly and safely using this Tablet.

2. CONNECTING TO AC POWER
a) Connecting to AC power is suggested when starting the tablet for the very first time. It is highly recommended that all new units
battery packs be initialized. Initializing is the process of fully charging, discharging, and then charging again. It can take several
hours, but will maximize the battery packs long term potential. Instructions are on pages 6-17 through 6-18 of the complete
user’s manual.
b) Use only the supplied AC adapters as using others may damage the tablet.
c) When the AC adapter is connected, it also charges the battery pack. The battery charge indicator glows Amber when charging is
in progress and glows Green when fully charged. Glows Red when the batteries capacity is below 10%.
d) When disconnecting the AC adapter, remove the electrical outlet connection first and then from the tablet. A reverse procedure
may damage the AC adapter or the tablet.
e) If you have to turn the tablet on again immediately after turning it off, wait at least five seconds. Turning the tablet off and on
rapidly can damage it.

3. STOPPING THE TABLET – MODES (Chapter 2)

When you finish a working session, you can stop the tablet by turning off the power or leaving the tablet in Standby or Hibernation
mode. To restart the tablet from any of these three modes you will need to press the power button.

4. OPERATING THE TABLET (Chapter 2)

a) Quick Buttons – The Function button toggles on and off to active secondary functions (blue items on buttons). When on the FN
icon appears in the system tray.
b) Keyboard lock button locks and unlocks the keypad. Press once to activate and hold continuously for three seconds to deactivate.
This prevents accidental pressing of the keypad during transport or usage.
c) To use the keypad during poor lighting conditions, turn on the keypad backlight by pressing the FN button, then press the “8”.
To deactivate keypad backlight press FN “8” again.
d) to change the screen orientation from landscape to portrait press FN “7”
e) to switch the touch screen or active digitizer On or Off press FN “1”
f) to switch the sunlight readable mode On or Off press FN “4”
g) the onscreen keyboard can be activated by locating and clicking on the keyboard icon on the lower left of the system tray. Note:
to protect the LCD display, use the touch screen or digitizer pen as a pointing device. Do not use a sharp object such as a ballpoint
pen or pencil. THE TOUCH SCREEN IS NOT AVAILABLE DURING POST. YOU WILL NEED TO HAVE A USB KEYBOARD IN
ORDER TO USE THE BIOS FEATURES.

5. MANAGING POWER AND THE BATTERY PACK (Chapter 3)

a) The AC adapter serves as a converter from AC (Alternating Current) to DC (Direct Current) power because your tablet runs on
DC power, but an electrical outlet usually provides AC power. It safely operates in the voltage range of 100 ~ 240 Volts AC.
b) The AC adapter is designed for use with your tablet only. Connecting the adapter to another device can damage the adapter.
c) If you plan on a trip overseas consult RNB for the appropriate power cord/connector.
e) The operating time of a fully charged battery pack depends on how you are using the tablet. When your applications often access
peripherals, you will experience a shorter operating time.
f) Charging of the battery pack, which normally takes three hours at room temperature, will not start below 0°C (32°F). It is also not
recommended to charge the battery when the temperature is above 045°C (113°F). During charging, do not disconnect the AC
adapter before fully charged; otherwise you will get a prematurely charged battery with diminished run time.
g) Any battery level indication is an estimated result. The actual operating time can vary depending on usage of the tablet.
h) A battery low indicator occurs when approximately 10% battery life remains. The battery charge light will blink Red. The
Windows default 10% can be changed to suite your requirements.
 i) If you are using the audio subsystem, PC Card, external hard drive or flash disk, the battery might run out of charge quickly after
the battery low indication. You should immediately connect the AC adapter or safely place the tablet in standby or hibernation
mode.
j) Hibernation mode is a very useful feature. You do not need to close applications. The tablet stores the state of your tablet to a file
on the hard drive then shuts down. The next time you turn on the tablet (by pressing the power button) you tablet returns to the exact
state you left it and boots much quicker then a warm or soft boot.

6. POWER-SAVING TIPS (Chapter 3)

a) Decrease the LCD brightness to the lowest comfortable level
b) Shorten the length of time before Windows turns off the display when not in use.
c) Many USB devices use power just by being connected. Disconnect when not in use.
d) If any application uses a PC Card, exit that application when not in use. Remove the card as some devices draw power from the
table even while they are inactive.
e) Deactivate the GPS, Wireless and Bluetooth devices if not in use as they draw a significant amount of energy.
f) Hot and warm docking of the tablet is possible with the docking connector, but, it is recommended that prior to undocking, press
the Menu button to activate the Easy Tap screen and choosing Out/Off.

7. BLUETOOTH AND GPS (Chapter 2)

a) The incorporated Bluetooth capability is for short range communications (about 10 meters). By default, Bluetooth is active
(always On) upon booting and is in the general discoverable and pairable mode. The logo in the system tray is blue with White
when On and Blue with Green when connected.
b) The incorporated GPS capability will require a third party GPS Navigation software package to take advantage of the GPS
feature.

8. BIOS AND SYSTEM RECOVER (Chapter 5)

a) The BIOS can be accessed by pressing the ENT key when prompted during initial post start up. Note: to manage the BIOS you
will need a USB keyboard connected as the touch screen or active digitizer is disabled outside of Windows. The built-in System
Recover feature allows your system’s hard disk drive to return back to its factory default state with Windows operating system in its
initial setting. Note: ALL PREVIOUSLY STORE SETTINGS AND DATA WILL BE LOST. See Chapter five for more
information. Specific instructions begin on page 5-11.
b) Within the BIOS settings (Main Menu) is a very useful “Power Button Delay” which allows you to prevent power On/Off
conditions through accidental pressing of the power button. See page 5-6 of the user’s manual.
c) Another useful set of features in BIOS (Advanced Menu) are the Total Graphics & DVMT Graphics Memory allocation settings
as well as HDD Preheat (if the option was purchased) & High Temperature Protection settings.
d) The Security Menu is used for setting the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) state. See pages 5-8 & 6-2 for more information.

9. USING THE TPM, EASYTAP, AND G-MANAGER UTILITIES (Chapter 6)

a) TPM is a hardware-based security feature that can be used to create and manage computer generated digital certificates. See page
6-2.
b) Easy Tap utility is allows you to activate/operate certain functions of your tablet through use of an on screen graphical User
Interface. See page 6-3 thru 6-12.
c) G-Manager utility is a unified user interface that allows you to manage/configure various system components such as: System,
Battery, Light Sensor, ECO (Economy Mode), Ignition (when connected to a car battery), Monitoring Functions, Antenna
and GPS Status. See pages 6-13 thru 6-29
