Determination of Concentration of Bromine Cyanide and Methyl Bromide and The Rate of Reaction As A Function of Time

Methyl bromide is a gas used as an irritant fumigant against pests and in soil treatment. It is prepared through the bromination of methane in a semi-batch reactor. The document determines the concentration of methyl bromide and cyanide bromide over time as well as the reaction rate as a function of various parameters in the reaction between aqueous bromine cyanide and methyl amine to form methyl bromide and cyanamide.

Methyl bromide is a gas at room temperature and pressure .

It is an irritant and a highly

penetrative fumigant. It is used against a wide variety of pests and also for soil treatment.

It is prepared by the bromination of methane by nucleophilic substitution. The following

reaction is carried out isothermally in a semi batch reactor.

Determination of concentration of bromine cyanide and methyl bromide

and the rate of reaction as a function of time
Reactant

Let A : Concentration of aqueous bromine cyanide

Let B : Concentration of aqueous methyl amine

Product

Let C : Concentration of methyl bromine

Let D : Concentration of cyanamide

Assumption
Concentration of aqueous methyl amine (B), CBo = 0.025 mol/dm3

Flow rate of aqueous methyl amine (B) , v0 = 0.05 dm3/s

Concentration of aqueous bromine cyanide (A) , CAo = 0.05 mol/dm3

The specific reaction rate constant , k = 2.2 dm3/s.mol

Hence , it can be written that :

Since it is a single step reaction , the rate law is given by :

r a=k C A C B

dCA v
dt V( )
=k C A C B o C B

C
( BoC B)
dCA v
dt
=k C A C B + o
V ( )

Since
V =V o + v o t

Similarly for the products C and D ,

d NC
=r c V =r a V
dt
C
C
C
( C)
d + v o CC
dt
( C) dV
d +C C =V
dt dt
( C V )
d =V
dt
d NC
=
dt

Therefore ,
d CC v C
=k C A C B o c
dt V

and also ,
d CD v C
=k C A C B o D
dt V

In order to calculate conversion , X

Since

N Ao N A
X=
NA0

Then
C Ao V o C A V
X=
C A0 V o
