Assignment 1 2017

This document outlines an assignment to design an appropriate layout for additional facilities at SLIIT, including a nursing school, primary/secondary school, swimming pool, and wastewater treatment plant. The specific tasks are to: 1) create a site plan identifying boundaries, roads, buildings, waterways, and elevations; 2) propose a layout for existing and new facilities; 3) layout the proposed additions onto the existing layout; 4) show pedestrian and vehicular access; and 5) provide preliminary cost estimates. Deliverables include a 20-25 page report and site plans in A3 format. The deadline is March 20th for 30% of the marks, with an additional 5% for a presentation.

ASSIGNMENT 1

(Identification of an appropriate layout)

Scope and background
This project is a medium scale planning project and as such, it is open ended. The project has to
deal different specializations. One intention of this project is to define constraints and work
within as part of the problem. This will pave the way to come with innovative solutions. In this
particular project you will not only have the opportunity to plan and design the remaining works
of a master plan, but you will be able to compare what was actually done with what could have
been done. The project as well as master plan are mostly hypothetical.

Task
SLIITs master plan (1999) also include building(s) for a three year nursing degree program, a
primary and secondary school, a swimming pool, and a wastewater treatment plant, in addition to
what it has now. Also, it want to improve the drainage of the northern half by fully utilizing the
natural (?) stream flowing through. You are completely free in your choice of buildings
(including net/gross foot print) and locations, access, utilities, foundations etc. However, as in
any civil engineering work quality and cost need to be thought of.
# Faculty of Nursing: (batch size 150; four lecture rooms of the size E101; three laboratories
each of the size of the water laboratory)
# School: Mix gender; 2000 students; no need to provide separate sport infrastructure
# Swimming pool: 32 m long; six lanes

Specific tasks
1) The site plan (survey map/boundary survey map) of SLIIT: identify SLIIT land
boundaries, mark internal/external roads, buildings, waterways and special geological
features. In addition spot heights may be taken to accommodate elevation differences if it
is needed for the other tasks.
2) Identify the appropriate layout of all buildings and other facilities (existing and proposed)
on the site map. Assume you are free to change the locations and dimensions of the
existing infrastructure, and the terrain has not been changed with time. This will insinuate
whether the existing layout is the best
3) The layout of the proposed components on the existing layout (this is what that could be
done, as demolish and reconstruct options are infeasible)
4) The internal, and external (i.e. on public roads) pedestrian and vehicular movements with
improvements needed once the new components are added
5) Preliminary costing for the proposed improvements/additions (low cost with an
appropriate quality should be aimed; e.g. may be a 10 story building on piles can be more
cheap than two five stories on rafts, but it should be structurally acceptable)

Deliverables

Specific details of the report will be made available in due course.

General details: A 20-25 page report (12,000 15,000 words)/ Items 1-2 in A3 sheets (soft copies
need to be provided; use different layers)
Presentation details will be given later

Date of submission and marks

# March 20, 2017; 30 marks (report) + 5 marks (presentation).
# Even though this is a group work, group marks will be adjusted based on individual
contribution. The group is given the opportunity to propose individual member contribution (%),
and that needs to be tally with the log book entries.

NOTES:
1. Approximate maps (site plans) are enough; accuracy expected: linear ( 10%); area
(10%) and elevation/spot heights (nearest 1 m). You may use an aerial
map/photograph/topo-sheet and digitize or may do a cadastral survey
2. Surveying equipment will be issued for a predefined period. Unable to complete within
the given time, means the group need to resort to other options, hiring from an external
organization!
3. All maps should be drawn using a software like AutoCAD with different layers
4. In CDP I and II self-studying is expected in addition to what were taught
