Abstract
The report is written to analyze the more preferred sport
between locally loved Cricket and globally more popular
Football.
The above stated study was conducted through a proper
conducted survey in the previous days among the 15-18
age group children who play either or both of the two
sports at our 2 locality parks.
The findings that come out are quite interesting which
shows a very tough competition between the two sports
though gives us a final result that which sport has an edge
over the other when It comes to the popularity while
playing that sport or watching the sport.
The significance of making this report is simply to
understand that which sport is more popular than the other
because both the sports have their own significance and to
find out that which one wins over the other you will have to
go through the designed and detailed report further.
Introduction to SPORTS:-
I. Cricket: Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams
of 11 players each on a field at the Centre of which is a rectangular 22-
yard-long pitch. The game is played by 120 million players in many
countries, making it the world's second most popular sport. Each team
takes its turn to bat, attempting to score runs, while the other
team fields. Each turn is known as an innings (used for both singular
and plural).

The bowler delivers the ball to the batsman who attempts to hit the
ball with his bat away from the fielders so he can run to the other end
of the pitch and score a run. Each batsman continues batting until he
is out. The batting team continues batting until ten batsmen are out, or
a specified number of overs of six balls have been bowled, at which
point the teams switch roles and the fielding team comes in to bat.

In professional cricket, the length of a game ranges from 20 overs per

side to Test cricket played over five days. The Laws of Cricket are
maintained by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and
the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) with additional Standard Playing
Conditions for Test matches and One Day Internationals.

Cricket is generally believed to have been first played in

southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century,
it had become the national sport of England. The expansion of
the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas and by the mid-
19th century the first international match was held. ICC, the game's
governing body, has 10 full members. The game is most popular
in Australasia, England, the Indian subcontinent, the West
Indies and Southern Africa.

ii. Football: Football refers to a number of sports that involve, to

varying degrees, kicking a ball with the foot to score a goal.
Unqualified, the word football is understood to refer to whichever form
of football is the most popular in the regional context in which the word
appears: association football (known as soccer in some countries) in
the United Kingdom; gridiron football (specifically American
football or Canadian football) in the United States and
Canada; Australian rules football or rugby league in different areas of
Australia; Gaelic football in Ireland; and rugby
football (specifically rugby union) in New Zealand. These different
variations of football are known as football codes.

Various forms of football can be identified in history, often as

popular peasant games. Contemporary codes of football can be traced
back to the codification of these games at English public schools in the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The expanse of the British
Empire allowed these rules of football to spread to areas of British
influence outside of the directly controlled Empire, though by the end
of the nineteenth century, distinct regional codes were already
developing: Gaelic football, for example, deliberately incorporated the
rules of local traditional football games in order to maintain their
heritage. In 1888, The Football League was founded in England,
becoming the first of many professional football competitions. During
the twentieth century, several of the various kinds of football grew to
become some of the most popular team sports in the world

Current Scenario in India:-

Of Cricket: - Since 2000, the Indian team underwent major
improvements with the appointment of John Wright, India's first ever
foreign coach. This appointment met success internationally as India
maintained their unbeaten home record against Australia in Test series
after defeating them in 2001 and won the inaugural ICC World T20 in
2007. India was also the first Sub-continental team to win at the WACA
in January 2008 against Australia.

India's victory against the Australians in 2001 marked the beginning of

a dream era for the team under the captainship of Sourav Ganguly,
winning Test matches in Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, West Indies and
England. India also shared a joint victory with Sri Lanka in the ICC
Championship, and went on to the finals in the 2003 Cricket World Cup
only to be beaten by Australia.

In September 2007, India won the first ever Twenty20 World Cup held
in South Africa, beating Pakistan by 5 runs in a thrilling final.

India won the Cricket World Cup in 2011 under the captainship of
Mahindra Singh Dhoni, the first time since 1983 they beat Sri
Lanka in the final held in Mumbai.

Of Football: - India has long been known for hockey and cricket. It
has given birth to legends, but in the arena of football it is still lagging
behind. But not to forget that India has had a rich legacy in field of
soccer. Truly speaking the history of soccer in India is quite old and the
Kolkata Soccer League is the second oldest championship in the
world. India had once been a tough competitor. In the Melbourne
Olympic of 1956 India came fourth in soccer, and also won Asiad in
1951 and 1962.But in recent years the performance of Indian football
team degraded rapidly and went from bad to worse. In present
scenario India has regularly failed to qualify for World Cup and final
round of Olympics. Still the team is developing and with some good
players the team has vast scope to improve its quality and regain its
lost glory.

My Findings
On the basis of my survey done on around 35 children mixed
responses came in for their preferences between cricket and
football.

In a country being India where cricket is far more popular than

Football still a predicted though a bit surprising result came out as
on viewership basis a tough fight between the two sports is clearly
visible as of the 35 surveys 19 children prefer watching cricket
while 16 of them likes to watch football over cricket. The outcome
has resulted this which is because of the recent changes we are
witnessing for the first time ever in the Indian football history. The
birth of all new Domestic football league branded as Indian Super
League or ISL which boasts a number of star footballers from
European and South American countries providing a plenty of
opportunities to the young talent and attracting youngsters also
registered the 5th highest viewership ratings across the world at its
inaugural season only. Along with ISL, the Subroto Cup, the five
year old Airtel I-League, etc. also provides some classic matches
and interesting results.

In the meanwhile though Cricket is still more popular than football

but the difference is only a bit marginal now and it can be said
that it is because of the most recent spot fixing cases, scams in
the high profile Indian Premier League (IPL) and world cricket too.
But still in a country where Cricket is treated as a religion and
Master Blaster player Sachin Tendulkar as its god millions of fans
are still there who believe in the game that the things will be
improved and its legacy will remain forever. There are still millions
of people who never want to miss a cricket match and the likes of
wonderful captaincy of MS Dhoni and his much famous Helicopter
Shots, effluent Rohit Sharma, 360degree AB de Villiers or the Sixer
King Yuvraj Singh and his six sixes of an over and many more.
Cricket is still like a Fever among its fans and the latest example of
it is the Kanpur ODI between India and South Africa where the
passion to witness the match at the stadium was so high that a
high temperature of 37 degree could also not stop the cricket
lovers to sit at the stands and watch the match where a little more
than half a ground is open i.e. without shade from morning 6:30am
to evening 5pm.

Quoting another example of the cricket passion among its lovers is

the Cuttack T20 where the crowd at stadium on seeing their
favorite Team India lose badly could not digest the moment and
which some time later busted into their anger shown by throwing
the water bottles at the ground though its not a wise act from any
angle but clearly shows that what Cricket means in a country like
India.
Now when it comes to playing a sport of the two, the results that
come out is 17 children want to play cricket only while 15 want to
play Football only and leaving 3 children who dont play any
sports. The difference arising is quite simple to understand as we
have discussed earlier that in India Cricket is far more popular
than Football and so it is but natural that Cricket will be played
more than Football but the rate at which the popularity of football
is increasing those days are not far when football will come on the
same level where today Cricket is.

CONCLUSION
To conclude we may of course conclude that in India where Cricket
is worshipped as a religion and players playing this beautiful sport
as its gods, as well people share a very emotional attachment with
the game. This can be acknowledged very clearly as people travel
100s of kilometers to go to their nearest International stadiums to
witness the matches and some of those who cant digest their
teams loss die of sudden heart attacks or even commit suicides. It
can clearly be said that football will have to develop to a lot more
high level because it can challenge the legacy of cricket in Metro
and Big Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata etc. but in small cities,
towns and rural areas Cricket has its grassroots very strong and
there the youngsters dream of playing in the local, state national
level and even in the street teams.

So to say finally, both the beautiful sports have their own

significance and importance. Football is globally the most popular
sport played and watched but in India the case the entirely
opposite where in terms of watching or playing Cricket is far more
popular than Football and one would not be wrong to say that the
situation will remain the same in the next 50-75 years too.
