Design of RC Stuctures:: Different Members of RCC Structures

Concrete structures consist of basic elements like beams, columns, slabs, walls, and foundations. Slabs are horizontal plate elements that carry loads acting perpendicular to their surface, including self-weight and movable loads. Slabs commonly transmit floor loads to vertical frames like columns. There are two types of slabs: one-way slabs where the lateral dimension is less than twice the longitudinal dimension, and two-way slabs where it is greater.

DESIGN OF RC STUCTURES:

Different Members of RCC Structures

Concrete is used for all standard building both single storey and multi-storey,
retaining structure and bridges. A concrete structure considered as consist of some
basic structural elements, such as beams, columns, slabs, walls and foundation.
The different elements of a RC structure are briefly described as bellow.

Slabs: slabs are the horizontal plate element, which will carry loads predominantly
acting perpendicular to their surface. These loads are dead load (self weight) and
live load (moveable load). Commonly floor slabs are horizontal and transmit loads
to the vertical frames (i.e. column) of the structure. Two types of slabs are there,
(a) one way slabs and (b) two way slabs. If the lateral dimension of the slab is less
than or equal to two times of the longitudinal dimension then it is called two way
slab, if not then called one way slab.
