Implementation:
1. Children were asked what they wanted to do in the
creative center and it was a unanimous decision to do
puffy paint.
2. In relevance to the upcoming Lunar New Year, I decided
to create the puffy paint activity using the traditional
colors used in Lunar New Year to also teach the children
about it.
3. I set out the large brown paper on the table and taped it
down to make sure the paper will not move or shift
while they are painting on the paper.
4. I set out the four containers, which each child chose
themselves, and gave them the respective stirrers.
5. I asked the children what color they wanted to use and
told them about the significance of each other while
they chose.
6. I gave one child the shaving cream bottle and let them
press the bottle to release the shaving cream on their
own unless they wanted me to do it for them.
7. They mixed the paint and the shaving cream together
until the mixture was incorporated.
8. LET THE PAINTING BEGIN!
2 Teaching Strategies:
1. Questions: I will use questions to help extend and
enhance the childrens learning throughout this
experience such as:
- Do you know why were using these colors?
- Do you remember what the RED color means?
- What colors are used for Lunar New Year?
- What else should we put?
- What holiday are we celebrating?

2. Sensory Engagement: I will use the teaching strategy of

sensory engagement because the children learn best by
hands-on experience. They get firsthand experience
using real objects and they learn best using their senses.
When they touch the shaving cream, mix the paint and
shaving cream, use their hands to paint on the large
paper, and smell the shaving cream they are learning
and extending their experience.

children to talk amongst themselves about their own cultures as

Despite the success of this activity, the only aspect that did not
work as well was the beaded necklaces used to make and create
a firework effect on the paper. They either got stuck or got lost
within the shaving cream which the children found fun because
they were able to reach in and get messy with the shaving
cream, however, if the beaded necklaces were reinforced on a
popsicle stick or something else in order to allow the children to
use them without get lost within the container. This is an
example of what I would like to do differently if I were to
implement this activity again.
I learned through this experience that children learn by doing.
As they are painting, I am telling them about the significance of
the colors they are using to paint, and oddly enough, the
children do take the information well as they do remember
tidbits throughout the day. I also learned and became
appreciative of art smocks. The first time this activity
happened, the children and I forgot to put on smocks and our
shirts were completely covered in puffy paint. As good as it
smelled, the colors in contrast to the nice shirts they were
wearing were not exactly happy looking.
I will be making Chinese Lanterns and constructing the Lunar
New Year board as an extension.
