Rules: Not Permitted

The document contains rules for a math test with 15 multiple choice questions. It specifies the time limit, allowed materials, acceptable answer format, and instructions for submitting answers via private message to receive a score and potentially be included on a leaderboard. Answers must be integers from 000 to 999 and the test allows scratch paper, rulers, compasses, and protractors but not calculators or computers.

Rules

0. Read all of these rules.

1. The time limit is 3 hours. These 3 hours should be continuous, e.g. do
not work for 2 hours on one day, and then 1 hour on another day.
2. All answers are integers ranging from 000 to 999, inclusive. Your score
will be the number of correct answers. There is neither partial credit
nor a penalty for wrong answers.
3. No aids other than scratch paper, graph paper, ruler, compass, and
protractor are permitted. In particular, calculators and computers are
not permitted.
4. Once you complete the test, send your answers to CantonMathGuy,
Mudkipswims42, or PersonPsychopath via AoPS PM.
Indicate if you want to appear on the leaderboard.
Do not edit your PM after submitting it. This is enforced to pre-
vent cheating. If you would like to change an answer before your
submission is graded, please send a reply in the same PM.
5. Good luck!
1. Anna, Beth, and Carl are discussing their favorite 3-digit numbers. They notice that moving the last
digit of Annas number to the beginning results in Beths number, and moving the last digit of Beths
number to the beginning results in Carls number. Carl is sad because he notices that Annas number
and Beths number are perfect squares, but not even the sum of the digits of his number is a perfect
square. Find Carls favorite number.

2. Consider the system of equations x2 + 6y 36 = 0 and y2 6x 36 = 0. If the four real solutions to this
system are ( x1 , y1 ), ( x2 , y2 ), ( x3 , y3 ), and ( x4 , y4 ), then find (y1 + y2 + y3 + y4 ) ( x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 ).
3. Find the 50th smallest positive integer whose base two representation has an equal number of zeroes
and ones. (For example, the smallest numbers with this property are 102 , 10012 , 10102 , and 11002 .
Express your answer in base 10.)

4. An arithmetic sequence of positive integers is called gleaming if it has at least three terms, exactly one
of which is larger than 2017. Find the remainder when the number of gleaming sequences is divided by
1000.
5. A regular hexagon and equilateral triangle are inscribed in a unit circle such that for each side in the
equilateral triangle, there exist two sides in the hexagon that are parallel to

it. The area of the region
that lies within the hexagon but outside the triangle can be expressed as a c b d, where a, b, c, and d
are positive integers such that a and c are relatively prime and b is not divisible by the square of any
prime. Find a + b + c + d.

6. Let n be a perfect square less than 10000 such that the positive difference between its tens digit and
units digit is 3. Let r be the remainder when n is divided by 100. Find the sum of all possible values of
r.
7. Let f ( x ) = x2 + 1 for all x, and let a be the largest integer not exceeding

f (21 1) f (22 1) f (23 1) f (22017 1) f (21 + 1) f (22 + 1) f (23 + 1) f (22017 + 1)

.
f (21 ) f (23 ) f (25 ) f (24033 )

Find the remainder when a is divided by 1000.

8. Pentagon ABCDE is inscribed in a circle with

radius

3. If AB = BC = 2 and CD = DE = 4, then the
length of AE can be expressed in the form a b+e c d , where a, b, c, d, and e are positive integers, a, c, and
e are relatively prime, and neither b nor d is divisible by the square of any prime. Find a + b + c + d + e.
9. Let P( a, b, c) be a polynomial satisfying

a7 (b c) + b7 (c a) + c7 ( a b) = ( a b)( a c)(b c) P( a, b, c)

for all real a, b, and c. Find P(1, 1, 1).

10. Find the number of integers k with 2 k 1000 satisfying the following property: for every positive
integer n relatively prime to k, nn1 1 is a multiple of k.
11. Let x1 < x2 < x3 < be all the real numbers greater than 1 satisfying the equation

x2 b x2 c = ( x b x c)2 .
m
Then, x2017 can be expressed as n, where m and n are relatively prime positive integers. Find m + n.
12. A boy has a 5 5 square grid. Initially, every cell of the grid is uncolored, except for the corner cells,
which have four different colors: red, yellow, blue, and green. He wants to color some (possibly none)
of the uncolored cells with red, yellow, blue, and green such that, for each color, the cells of that color
form a rectangle. If there are N ways for him to do that, find the remainder when N is divided by 1000.

13. For every nonempty sequence a1 , a2 , . . . , an of positive integers, define its value to be

1
.
2 a1 (2 a1 + 2a2 )(2a1 + 2 a2 + 2 a3 ) (2 a1 + 2 a2 + + 2 a n )

For example, the value of the sequence 2, 1, 1 is

1 1
= .
22 (22 + 21 )(22 + 21 + 21 ) 192

Let c be the sum of the values of all nonempty sequences of positive integers. Find the largest integer
not exceeding 360c.
14. Let ABC be a triangle with AB = 13, BC = 14, and AC = 15, and let A1 be the point diametrically
opposite A on the circumcircle of 4 ABC. Let D be a point of the circumcircle of 4 ABC, and let E
be the point such that BDCE is a parallelogram. If the maximum possible area of 4 A1 DE can be
expressed as m
n where m and n are relatively prime positive integers, find the remainder when m + n is
divided by 1000.

15. A token is placed at a vertex of a regular 20-gon. Each day, the token rolls to a vertex adjacent to the
vertex it is on at random. Let E be the expected number of days that must pass before the token has
visited each vertex at least once. Find the largest integer not exceeding E.

Once you complete the test, send your answers to CantonMathGuy, Mudkipswims42, or
