ISEN 350: Laboratory 4_502
Sum of Normal Random Variables
Central Limit Theorem
Due 3/1
Purpose:
The purpose of this lab is for you to understand the concept of sums of normal random variables and the
central limit theorem.
Lab Procedure
Part I (Sum of normal random variables)
Three shafts are made and assembled in a linkage of total length L. The length of each shaft, in centimeters,
is distributed as follows:
Shaft1: x1~N(34, 0.075 ) Note that 0.075 is the variance, not the standard deviation.
Shaft2: x2~N(29, 0.055)
Shaft3: x3~N(60, 0.14)

(a) What is the distribution of the linkage length L? Why? Identify its parameters. (Theoretical)
(b) Now we will use Minitab to simulate the production of the linkage. Generate 3 columns of
1,000 rows containing random normal data, each representing the length of the three respective
shafts composing one linkage. Use Calc>Random Data>Normal to generate the appropriate
values in each column. Use Calc>Row Statistics and selecting the sum function find the total
length L placing your result in column C4.
(c) Plot a histogram for L using Graph>histogram, and similarly plot a probability plot for L.
Use Stat>Basic Statistics>Display Descriptive Statistics to describe the central tendency and
variation in L. Do your applied results indicate a good fit to the normal distribution? Does your
data agree with your theoretical results in Part (a)?
Part II. (Central Limit Theorem)
1) Consider the Minitab worksheet Lab_4_Data.MTW found on eCampus. The data set consist of 100
sets of 50 samples each. Complete the following steps using Minitab:
a) Open the data set as a Minitab Worksheet.
-Use Data>Stack>Columns to place all the data values into a single column of your choosing.
1
-Use plots under the Graph tab to generate a histogram, probability plot and stem-and-leaf plot for
the entire data set. Reviewing the plots can you suggest a possible distribution that fits the data?
Which one?
b) -Use the Individual Distribution Identification function in Stat->Quality Tools to fit the stacked
data to a distribution. Test the normal, gamma, and logistic distributions.
-A straight line shows the better fitting distributions. (Note the p-values). Which distribution seems
to best fit the data?
c) -Now return to the original data set with 50 columns.
-Compute the average value for each of the samples of 50 values using Calc>Row Statistics and
selecting the mean function. Store the sample means, , in a column of your choosing.
-Create a histogram of the sample averages, .
-Create a normal probability plot using Graph>Probability Plot.
-Does this set of data appear to be normally distributed? What does this say about the distribution
of ?
d) -Again use the Individual Distribution Identification function to test which of the 3 distributions
best fits the sample mean data. Did the normal distribution fit best?
