    Aptitude Shortcuts and Mind Tricks for Time and Distance Problems Type-I

    (Problems on Trains)

    Model Question:

    1.) A and B are two stations at 390km apart, a train starts from A at 10.AM and travels
    towards the station B at 65kmpl. Another train starts from B at 11.AM towards station A

    at 35kmpl. At what time do they meet each other?

    Given:

    Total Distance between Two stations- 390km

    First train starts from station A at 10 AM at the speed on 65kmpl

    Second train starts from station B at 11 AM at the speed of 35kmpl

    Take, x as the time they meet each other after 10.AM (the time at which first train starts

    from the station A)

    For this type of problems, we have very simple method to get answer.

    We all know that, Distance = Speed Time

    Using the above formula we can form this equation by the given data.

    (Distance moved by First train in x hours) + (Distance moved by Second train in (x-1)

    hours) = 390 (total distance between A and B) Equation (1)

    Note:

    In the case of second train we are taking as (x-1) because, the second train

    starts after one hour from the station.

    Here we are adding the distance of both trains because it travels in opposite

    direction, if it travels in same direction we need to subtract each.

    Now Substitute the given data in the Equation (1)

    Then we will get like this,

    65x + 35(x-1) = 390

    100x= 390+35

    So, x= 4
    4
    i.e., they will meet after 4 hrs and 15 mins from 10 AM

    The Exact time at which they will meet is, add 4 hrs 15 mins with 10 AM

    Answer is- 2.15 PM

    Model Question:

    2.) Two stations A and B are 110 km apart on a straight line. One train starts from A at 7
    AM and travels towards B at 20kmpl. Another train starts from B at 8 AM and travels

    towards A at a speed of 25kmpl. At what time will they meet?

    Given:

    Total Distance between Two stations- 110km

    First train starts from station A at 7 AM at the speed on 20kmpl

    Second train starts from station B at 8 AM at the speed of 25kmpl

    Take, x as the time they meet each other after 7 AM (the time at which first train starts

    from the station A)

    (Distance moved by First train in x hours) + (Distance moved by Second train in (x-1)

    hours) = 110 (total distance between A and B) Equation (1)

    Now Substitute the given data in the Equation (1)

    Then we will get like this,

    20x + 25(x-1) = 110

    45x= 110+25
    135
    x=
    45
    So, x= 3

    i.e., they will meet after 3 hrs from 7 AM

    The Exact time at which they will meet is, add 3 hrs with 7 AM

    Answer is- 10 AM
