Approximating Square Roots Objective: To Approximate The Square Root of 5 Methods
The document provides steps to approximate square roots. It shows that the square root of 5 is approximately equal to 2.2 by finding the perfect squares before and after 5, which are 4 and 9. It then subtracts 4 from 9 to get the denominator of 5. Subtracting 4 from 5 gives the numerator of 1. So the approximate square root of 5 is written as 2 1/5 or 2.2. The document then lists steps to use this method to approximate other square roots by finding the successive perfect squares before and after the number and using the differences to determine the fractional part of the approximation.

Approximating Square Roots
Objective: to approximate the square root of 5 Methods: a. Find the perfect square just before and after 5. b. The square root of 4 is 2. So, the square root of 5 is greater than 2 by some fraction. To find the denominator of that fraction, subtract 4 from 9. 9 4 = 5. c. To get the numerator of the fraction, subtract 4 from 5. 5 4 = 1 1 d. The square root of 5 is approximately equal to 2 5 or 2.2.
Use the method given above to approximate the square root.
