1 - Chapter One:: Well Logging Project Report Instruction

The document provides instructions for a well logging project report that students must complete. It outlines 5 chapters that must be included: 1) literature review of well logging tools used in the project, 2) data description and quality control including depth matching, histograms and defining bad hole intervals, 3) lithology determination using cross plots at 10 depths, 4) porosity determination applying equations to density and acoustic logs, and 5) a quick look interpretation using the full log set to identify reservoir and non-reservoir intervals. The report must be over 20 pages and follow Harvard referencing style, with a deadline of January 10th, 2017.

Well logging project report instruction

Dear students

I hope you are enjoying your winter holiday and be ready for final examination
your project is out of 10 mark and it should be more than 20 pages based on harvard style
for referencing and citation and deadline is 10/1/2017
I want to give brief instruction for your well logging project step by step

Each project report must have following chapters and units:

Abstract

Preface

List of contents

List of figures

List of tables

Nomenclature

1 -chapter one: literature review including brief general information about

well logging and those tools you have used in your project

For this project you will use GR, SP, caliper, sonic logs such as DT, Density logs such as
RHOB and FDC, neutron logs such as NPHI, NPHE, NPHT, CNL, and PEF for lithology,
resistivity logs such us LLS, LLD, MSFL and if you ha other interesting logs for temperature
or saturation or pressure and wire tension also they can be useful for your project

Note: if you are not sure about the tool name you can find them in internet or you can
check the LAS file for units For example if we have a FDC log and you dont know what
type of log you are dealing with you can check the LAS file by Note pad or by Geolog to
check what is the unit of FDC, let say its GR/CM3 , it means this tool is type of Density tools

2- Chapter two: Data description and data quality control including Depth
matching and bad hole intervals

A) For data description we need to investigate our data by histogram and explain
their ranges and write your opinion about your data distribution (mean, average,
range)
B) Create full set log including : first column from left side : GR, SP, Caliper
second track: sonic log DT
Third track :Density log and Neutron log and PEF
forth track : resistivity logs such as LLS LLD MSFL

C) Find bad hole intervals by Caliper
if Drill bit size log is available use that, if not read min caliper from histogram and
use that for bad hole defining

Note: Put four histogram in one page and explain your presumption for your data

Note: if your data dont need depth match, explain why you dont need that

3-lithology determination
A) Select 10 different depths from your data
B) Create Neutron Density, Sonic Density and Sonic Neutron cross plots for all
selected depths
C) Determine lithology for those depths and put them in the table
D) For lithology determination you need to reconsider every steps you have done so
far To find any paradox between your lithology by different method

4- Porosity determination
A) Determine matrix density and travel time respectively by Neutron Density and
Sonic Neutron cross plots
B) Read corrected density from each cross plot
C) Apply porosity equation for Density and acoustic log
D) Use 1.05 for fluid density and 95 us/ft for fluid travel time
E) Put all porosity we calculated so far in one table and explain your interpretation
why we have differences and which one is more accurate

5-quick look interpretation

Eventually you need to use all steps you have done like full set log to find reservoir and
none reservoir intervals and specify if you have hydrocarbon reservoir where is that
