Essay Tyranny
Essay Tyranny
Guidelines:
Be sure to follow all formatting guidelines provided in the syllabus. Your final work product must
have a cover page with a word count, an essay that is 3-4 pages in length and a works cited
page. The minimum writing requirement expectation is two full pages in your own words
(excluding citations and paraphrasing). If the minimum expectations are not met, the assignment
will be marked incomplete. Be sure to provide a proper citation in MLA or APA format for all works
consulted on a separate works cited page.
Essay Questions:
- Discuss the definitions of the word Tyranny using two modern dictionaries. Be sure to
include a citation for each.
- Examine how the term was used in the Declaration of Independence. Then, discuss what
the term meant to Thomas Jefferson within the context of the document? Why does he
use that specific term? Is his use of the term valid? What historical evidence is there to
support his statements?
- How has the meaning of tyranny changed in modern times, after learning about its
historical implications? You will need a scholarly source and current events to
substantiate your answer.
- How is the fear of tyranny relevant in modern America? Again, be sure to include
citations for each source used to justify your answer.
1. Prepare a typed, one page creative writing piece that expands upon your initial
understanding or experiences with tyranny.
2. Your work can be in any number of forms; a poem, a short story, a lyrical rhyme, or a
screenplay are among some of the formats you may chose to express yourself.
3. Submit your work with this assignment, but on a separate page labelled as extra credit
that comes after the works cited page.
