Introduction: Large quantities of processed dolomite are used in the production of

float glass. In horticulture, dolomite and dolomitic limestone are added to soils and soil-
less potting mixes as a pH buffer and as a magnesium source. Dolomite is used in the
ceramic industry and in studio pottery as a glaze ingredient and a flux for the smelting
of iron and steel.
Legislation: Hazardous process I- Factories Act 1948- Schedule I. Toxic fumes/gas/-
particles: should not exceed their TLV as per Schedule II under factories Act.
Study Methodology: We visited factory which was grinding Dolomite powder near
Chhotaudepur that was situated in Runvad village. Walk through survey was taken in
different department of Factory. Careful Observation of different processes was done.
Various physical parameters as per checklist were observed along with observing working
patterns.
Observations and discussions: The common hazards observed in the factory were
Powder Dust, noise. Use of PPE s were ok (60%) among them.
Conclusion: As exposure to dust present in all department, risk of chemical hazards
present. Various respiratory and skin related disorders may occur to workers working for
prolong duration in factory. Method used for crushing the stones, packaging of powder
and transportation of it outside the factory was little old. Monitoring of employee health
status and implementation of sufficient internal control in the workplace required.

Chapter 1

Introduction

Large quantities of processed dolomite are used in the production offloat glass. Inhorti-
culture, dolomite and dolomitic limestone are added to soils and soilless potting mixes
as a pH buffer and as a magnesium source. Home andcontainer gardeningare common
examples of this use. Dolomite is also used as the substrate in marine (saltwater) aquar-
iums to help buffer changes in pH of the water. Wherecalcitelimestoneis uncommon or
too costly, dolomite is sometimes used in its place as afluxfor thesmeltingof iron and
steel. Dolomite is a popular choice formotorcycle speedway tracks throughoutAustrali-
aandNew Zealand. Dolomite is used in the ceramic industry and in studio pottery as a
glaze ingredient, contributingmagnesiumandcalciumas glass melt fluxes.

Chapter 2

Literature Review

Dolomite deposits are abundantly available at various places in Chhotaudepur district of

Gujarat State. The main factors of occupational health in dolomite factories are dust and
noise. Safety of employees during crushing, grinding operation, maintenance of grinding
equipment and handling of dolomite stones and packed dolomite powder begs shall be
priority of factory owner as per factory rules and regulations. Many factories owner still
using old type of machineries for crushing the stones. No advance machineries were used
by owners for packaging of dolomite powder and transporting into vehicles. Dust irritate
the skin, eyes and breathing organs, so that exposure must be prevented/minimized.
Dolomite is an anhydrous carbonate mineral composed of calcium magnesium carbonate,
ideally CaM g(CO3 )2 . The term is also used for a sedimentary carbonate rock composed
mostly of the mineral dolomite, An alternative name sometimes used for the dolomitic
rock type is dolostone.

2.1 Properties

The mineral dolomite forms white, tan, gray or pink crystals. Dolomite is a double
carbonate, having an alternating structural arrangement of calcium and magnesium
ions.

2.2 Process of making dolomite powder

The stones are mined from the small hills and broken into smaller pieces with the help of
hammer. The broken stones are loaded in the trolleys and transported to stone crushing
units in this grinding factory.

The main complaints of the working men were cough, breathlessness, backache, muscle
cramp, joint pain and injury at work. The overall work conditions including ventilation,
illumination, etc. were found to be satisfactory. However, dustiness due to breaking,
crushing and grinding of stones were potential environmental hazards. The higher values
of dust concentrations in storage godown air were may be due to heavy loading and
unloading activities. The work related accidents are reported more among the load-
handling workers. The accidents occurred mainly due to slipping and tripping of the
workers during the movement with the load in congested place.

2.3 Why is Ergonomics important?

In the workplace: According to Safe Work Australia, the total economic cost of work-
related injuries and illnesses is estimated to be $60 billion dollars. Recent research has
shown that lower back pain is the worlds most common work-related disability affect-
ing employees from offices, building sites and in the highest risk category, agriculture.
Ergonomics aims to create safe, comfortable and productive workspaces by bringing hu-
man abilities and limitations into the design of a workspace, including the individuals
body size, strength, skill, speed, sensory abilities (vision, hearing), and even attitudes.
The number of people in Australia aged 75 and over is forecast to double over the
next 50 years. With this, equipment, services and systems will need to be designed to
accommodate the increasing needs of the ageing population, applying to public trans-
port, building facilities, and living spaces. Ergonomics promotes a holistic approach
in which considerations of physical, cognitive, social, organizational, environmental and
other relevant factors are taken into account. Physical ergonomics is concerned with
human anatomical, anthropometric, physiological and biomechanical characteristics as
they relate to physical activity.
