Order of Operations

The document discusses the order of operations, which is the order that mathematical operations should be performed. It states that operations inside parentheses should be performed first from the inside out. Exponents come next, followed by multiplication and division from left to right, and then addition and subtraction from left to right. Some examples are provided to illustrate how to follow the proper order of operations to solve expressions step-by-step.

Order of Operations

Order of Operations refers to which operations should be performed and in which order.

1. Parentheses (inside out)

2. Exponents
3. Multiplication and Division (left to right)
4. Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

To remember the order of operations, you can think of PEMDAS, Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.

This means that you should do what is possible within parentheses first (if parentheses are enclosed within other
parentheses, work from the inside out), then exponents, then multiplication and division (from left to right), and
the addition and subtraction (from left to right).

Examples:
#1 #5
4+5x6 Multiply 45 23 x 3 + 7 Exponents
= 4 + 30 Add = 45 8 x 3 + 7 Multiply
= 34 = 45 24 + 7 Subtract
= 21 + 7 Add
= 28

#2 #6
9 (6 + 5) Parentheses 72 2 x 3 + 4 x 23 - 33 Exponents
= 9 (11) Multiply = 72 2 x 3 + 4 x 8 27 Divide
= 99 = 36 x 3 + 4 x 8 27 Multiply, left to right
= 108 + 32 27 Add
= 140 27 Subtraction
= 113

#3 #7
2 (3 + 5) + 7 x 4 Parentheses Simplify the numerator and denominator
= 2 (8) + 7 x 4 Multiply, left to right separately, then divide, if possible.
= 16 + 28 Add
= 44 = 2 (7 + 8) + 2 Parentheses
3x5+1 Multiply

= 2 (15) + 2 Multiply
15 + 1 Add
#4
3x42x7+5 Multiply = 30 + 2 Add
= 12 2 x 7 + 5 Divide 16 16
=6x7+5 Multiply =
= 42 + 5 Add = _ 32__ Divide
= 47 16
