A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN or chassis number) is required on all vehicles first
used on or after 22 June 1987, and to which the NI Regulations apply except those, which
are:
Kit cars
Amateur built vehicles
if no VIN is permanently displayed, direct the vehicle presenter to the nearest Vehicle
Registration Office.
METHOD OF INSPECTION
1. Check that the vehicle is displaying a legible Vehicle Identification Number (this can
be either)

a. A Vehicle Identification Number is not permanently displayed or not legible
The following tables indicate the likely location at which the vehicle identification number is
stamped or etched on the body or chassis
33 Middle bulkhead
75, 90 Offside boot floor pan, close to boot edge
Aston Martin All models Offside chassis under wheel arch
Audi All models Centre bulkhead
*Bulkhead centre
Mercedes Benz All models On bonnet catch panel towards offside, centre
of bulkhead or an angle of bulkhead offside
Opel All models Under carpet flap between drivers door and sill
Renault 5, 9, 11, 21, 25, GTA Offside suspension top in the form of a series
of dots
Talbot Alpine, Samba, Horizon Offside inner wing near bulkhead or over
wheelarch
Vauxhall All models Under carpet flap between drivers door and sill
244, 240, 264, 265 Offside drivers door pillar (Estate: offside panel
on inside of storage compartment)
