1-A uniform circular mild steel shaft is mounted on two bearings 850 mm apart. The shaft carries a
gear A 200 mm diameter at 200 mm to the right of the left hand bearing and a pulley B 250 mm
diameter at 250 mm to the left of the right hand bearing. The gear is subjected to a horizontal load of
3500 N and a tangential vertical upward load of 9600 N. the pully is driven by a horizontal belt with a
horizontal belt with a tension on the tight side to be 6000 N and on the slack side to be 2000 N. design
the diameter of the shaft. Take the weight of the pulley to be 150 Kg. Select the proper anti-friction
bearings at the end of the shaft.
2-When analyzed, the gear-transmission shaft shown in the figure. The shaft speed is 360rev/min.
if f=24KN Determine the shaft diameter and bearing selection.
3-A counter shaft is supported on bearings 800 mm between centers. A 600 mm gear and a 700 mm
pulley are mounted as shown in Fig. 2. A pinion with a downward tangential force drives the gear and
the pulley drives drive a horizontal belt on the opposite side of the shaft. The pulley also serves as
flwyheel and weights 200 Kg. The belt is 150 mm wide and 8 mm thick and has a tension ratio of 3 :
1 the allowable stress in the belt is 1.75 N/mm2. Find the shaft diameter assuming possible stress
values and select the proper bearings at the end of the shaft.
4-A uniform circular mild steel shaft is mounted on two bearings 4 m apart. The shaft carries three
pulleys A, B and C, 500 mm, 750 mm and 300 mm respectively, pully A is driven by a motor 15 HP
placed vertical above it. Pulley B supplies 10 HP to a machine placed vertically bellow it and pulley C
supplies 5 HP to a machine placed vertically below it. The shaft runs at 200 rpm. The tension ratio in
belts may be taken at 2.5. Taking suitable safe stresses in tension and shear for the shaft material, you
are required to design the shaft diameter and select the proper bearing at the end of the shaft.
5-A uniform circular mild steel shaft is mounted on two bearings. The shaft carries two pulleys 3and 4
300 mm and 550 mm respectively, pulley 3 is driven by a motor 15 HP placed vertical above it.
Pulley 4 supplies 10 HP to a machine placed vertically bellow it. The shaft runs at 200 rpm. The
tension ratio in belts may be taken at 2.5. Taking suitable safe stresses in tension and shear for the
shaft material, you are required to design the shaft diameter and select the proper bearings.
6-An electric generator rotates at 200 rpm and receives 315 HP. From the driving engine. The
armature of the generator is 600 mm long and is located between the bearings center to center. Owing
to the combined weight of armature and the magnetic pull the shaft is subjected to 90000 N acting
right angles to the shaft. The shaft is forged from steel with ultimate tensile and sheer stress of 448
N/mm2 and 392 N/mm2 respectively. Assume load is uniformly distributed and find the diameter of
the shaft with a factor of safety 6. Select the bearings O and B.
