Deformation Mech

Deformation in mechanics refers to the transformation of a body from an initial configuration to a current configuration. Strain is used to describe deformation by measuring the relative displacement of particles in the body, excluding rigid motions. Different types of strain are used depending on the amount of deformation, from engineering strain which applies to small deformations, to other measures for large deformations. Strain can be decomposed into normal and shear components to understand stretching, compression, and shearing of the material.
