What Is Involved in The Design of Mechanical Systems?: Module 1: Lecture 1: Materials and Design

The document discusses the process of mechanical systems design, which involves 7 steps: 1) need identification, 2) concept generation, 3) embodiment, 4) detailing, 5) manufacturing, 6) marketing, and 7) feedback study. The scope is focused on steps 1-4, which involve identifying objectives and constraints, generating multiple design concepts, simple modeling and analysis, and more sophisticated analysis and CAD/FEA modeling during detailing. Qualitative constraints like appearance also play an important role in design along with quantitative constraints.
