Unit 3 - WRHW1
Harmonic expansions

Harmonic dictation (Major): All examples are in one recording.

The key is established, followed by a measure of wood block clicks.
You will hear each 3-chord harmonic example two times.
Stop the recording after the second hearing to work. Wood block clicks separate each example.

1.) Write the SOPRANO and BASS voices.

2.) Identify the Roman numerals (use bass line patterns to help determine the possible chords)
3.) Label the expansion type (N, P, CL, Cadential)

PART 3: CONTEXTUAL LISTENING
1.) Begin by transcribing the cello part, using the violin II and viola parts for context.
2.) Determine the Roman numerals that are possible given the bass shapes (expansions, Rule of the Octave).
3.) Transcribe the violin I line. (The ossia part in measures 3 and 4 highlights the rhythm and some chromatic notes to expect.)
4.) Finalize your Roman numerals when nished - use the context of the other lines to guide.
