5 PRELIMINARY OPERATION
It is possible to shut down all Mercury 332 functions, and all functions
connected to it electrically in the room, by using the emergency switch
located on the side of the seriograph and on the command console.
The foot rest is fixed on table top rails. Use 4 knobs (2 buttons under
handle foot rest and 2 knobs on the foot rest lateral side) to shift or
remove the foot rest on table top.
By pushing on the 2 buttons and with handle it is possible to shift the
foot rest along the rails where fixing points are present.
To remove the foot rest from the rails press at the same time the 4 knobs
and shift out of the rails.
The foot rest can, for examinations requiring it, also be mounted on the
head side (head side meaning the left side of the unit when seen from
the front).
WARNING:
, Before activating motorised parts, such as tilting, table top, angulation,
check that the patient is properly laying on the table top and with legs
and arms with in out line of the table top itself.
The fine patient centering on central X-ray beam will be done thanks to
the Joysticks mounted on control desk or by the pushbuttons of TSO
(table side operation) as explained on chapter 6.
5.3.1 Seriographies
This type of test requires the use of the seriograph and the tube-
collimator unit must be centered on the seriograph.
All operations pertaining to this type of test are described in chapter 7.
The cassette loading into the seriograph can be carried out when the
carriage is in the outside position.
Cassette loading
1. Put the cassette back edge onto the back jaw and push the
cassette into A direction.
2. When the cassette front edge is inside the front jaw, put the
cassette onto the carriage following B direction.
The spring of the back jaw will position the cassette in the
transverse direction.
3. Push key 57 to place the carriage inside the seriograph. During
the entrance movement the side jaws will carry the cassette to
the centre of the carriage.
Figure 2
Cassette unloading
1. Push the cassette into A direction until releasing it from the
front jaw.
2. Lift the cassette following B direction. The spring will facilitate
the cassette unloading by pushing on the back jaw.
Figure 3
5.3.2 Tomographies
5.3.3 Digital
Tests can be carried out by using accessories outside the Mercury 332,
such as, for instance, Teleradiographs or cassettes directly in contact
with patients.
In this case it will be necessary to rotate the tube-collimator unit until a
non-centered position on the seriograph is reached.
In this case Scopy, Preparation and X-rays controls of the spot film
device are not allowed.
It will therefore be necessary to select the "direct working position" on
the generator. However, preparation and X-ray commands on the foot
switch are active.
To rotate the tube-collimator unit, act on A release lever placed in the
lower part of the tube-carrying arm.
Figure 4
The following angle shots will be possible for the unit thanks to some
mechanical retainers:
+40 , +50, +90, 180, -90, -50 and -40
with respect to the 0 position (centering on seriograph).
These fixed angle shots allow the angle complementarity according to the
angle shots of the column.
All operations pertaining to this type of test are described in chapter 6.
6 OPERATING INSTRUCTION
NOTE:
* The procedures explained in the next pages make often reference to
Figure 6 at the end of this chapter.
To easily consult this figure, unfold the page in order to make it visible
while reading other pages of the manual.
6.1 Collimator
The Mercury 332 has been designed to be equipped with a square field
collimator or an iris square field collimator.
Both collimators are designed to work both in Manual and Automatic
mode; this second mode can be associated with the Hold function.
Functions
Signalling when collimator is closed.
Application
This pilot light allows to inform the operator that both jaws of the
collimator or one of them are closed.
Working conditions
This function is active in all operating modes.
Non-working conditions
None
Non-working conditions
This pilot lamp is lit when one or both jaws are in the position
corresponding to the minimum value adjusted for the potentiometer
of the relevant axis, therefore, if the minimum value does not
correspond to the perfect clamping of the jaw, the pilot light will be
lit correspondingly.
Function
Lighting of the collimator light.
Application
Lighting of the collimator light reproducing the irradiated area to
carry out the centering on the patient.
Working conditions
This function is active in all operating modes.
Non-working conditions
None.
Description
This control is present also on the table panel. If one of the four keys
on the collimator driving panel is activated, the light is automatically
lit.
WARNING:
, The duty cycle of the collimator lamp must not be longer than 2
consecutive activation cycles separated by 180 seconds of de-activation
(lamp off).
This duty cycle assure that parts which may come in touch with the
patient/user reach a too high temperature due to the heating effect of
the halogen lamp.
Function
Manual mode collimator.
Application
The manual mode collimator allows the execution of tests even with
cassettes not positioned in the seriograph ( working position out of
seriograph). As a matter of fact this mode will allow projections on
Teleradiographs , if any, or on cassettes directly in contact with the
patient.
Working conditions
The functioning of the collimator in this modality is here after
described:
When no program is selected and the fluoro command is non
active, the joysticks allow to collimate a format between the
minimum and the maximum.
During this limitation, the limiters inside the spot film device
follow the base jaws of the collimator.
When the scopy command is active instead, the maximum
available format is the one determined by the I.I. selected.
If a program whose format is smaller than the I.I. selected is
chosen, the collimator is positioned on the maximum available
format division. Then, using the joysticks, it will be possible to
collimate any format between the minimum and the division
format. This condition is valid either with the fluoro command
active or non active.
If a further reduction is requested, the internal limiters of the
spot film device follow the base jaws of the collimator, unless the
cross division is selected.
Non-working conditions
The manual mode cannot be applied when:
Digital is selected
Scopy is active.
Function
Automatic mode collimator.
Application
The automatic mode collimator allows the execution of tests on
cassettes positioned in the seriograph. Throughout the exposure the
jaw positioning will always be equal to the size of the selected
division.
Working conditions
The functioning of the collimator in this modality is here after
described:
When no program is selected the joysticks allow to collimate a
format between the set I.I. field and the minimum.
During this limitation, the internal limiters of the spot film device
follow the base jaws of the collimator.
If a program whose format is smaller than the selected I.I. field is
chosen, the collimator is positioned on the maximum available
format division. Then, using the joysticks, it will be possible to
collimate any format between the minimum and the division
format.
If a further reduction is requested, the internal limiters of the
spot film device follow the base jaws of the collimator, unless the
cross division is selected.
Non-working conditions
None.
Description
If the collimator is of the iris type, the collimation of the I.I. size will
be circular. If the size of the horizontal or vertical axis is smaller
than the I.I. size, the collimation will be carried out by the jaw and
not by the iris.
Function
Hold automatic mode collimator.
Application
The Hold automatic mode collimator allows the execution of tests on
cassettes positioned in the seriograph. Throughout exposure, the jaw
positioning will depend on the setting given by the operator.
Working conditions
The Hold function can be activated by default or manually along with
the automatic function. This setting is determined by the operator on
installation.
The functioning of the collimator in this modality is the same as for
the automatic mode except when, during fluoro, acting on the
joysticks a reduction of one or both jaws is requested. In this case,
with prep active, the collimator remains in the position selected with
the joysticks.
Non-working conditions
Manual mode collimator.
6.2 Seriograph
Functions
Cassette-holding carriage insertion and taking out of the seriograph.
Application
The carriage taking out allows to take out the cassette with the
exposed film and to load another cassette.
Working conditions
The key 57 of the table driving panel allows both taking out and
insertion of the cassette. Key 38 of the console instead, normally
allows only ejection of the cassette - holding carriage; during
installation, the system can also be set by the service engineer in
order to allow also cassette insertion from the console.
At the end of an exposure program the cassette-holding carriage is
automatically ejected if this function has been activated.
On the contrary the carriage waits for the ejection control in park
position; this allows the execution of a fluoroscopic test at the end of
a program.
Non-working conditions
The carriage is blocked in the park position and cannot be taken out
when a division has been set and then the digital mode is activated.
Function
Setting of division program.
Application
The selection of one of these programs allows to subdivide the size of
the cassette installed in the seriograph according to the tables at
paragraphs 4.2 and 4.3.
Working conditions
When the cassette-holding carriage reaches the park position and
one cassette is present, display 5 shows the size of the inserted
cassette, the first digit shows the size corresponding to the cassette
base (patients right side - left side); at the same time the leds of the
possible subdivisions corresponding to keys 30 to 35 are lit.
It is possible to select the program among those indicated by the
led by pushing the corresponding key.
All division leds will therefore be switched off except for the
selected led and display 6 will show the number of radiograms
available.
It is possible to modify the selection carried out by pushing the
key of the set selection again (push buttons 30 to 35 with led
on). This action makes all the possible divisions available again
and display 6 shows 0.
It is not possible to modify the selection carried out when a
program has already started, i.e. when display 6 shows a number
different from the initial number of the selected program.
If a program interruption is needed, it is necessary to act on key
57 (Figure 6) of the table driving panel or key 38 (Figure 6) of the
control panel; in this way the cassette will be directly ejected.
Non-working conditions
The division programming cannot be applied when:
no cassette is present
the carriage is in loading position
the digital mode is selected.
Description
At the end of each exposure the number shown by display 6 is
reduced by 1 unit.
Function
Setting of Fast sequence program.
Application
The selection of this program allows the execution of a series of
exposures in fast sequence.
The cassette-holding carriage does not reach the park position
between one exposure and the next one.
Working conditions
The Fast sequence program (Volet) can be selected only when a
division program is set.
When this function is activated, the relevant led is lit.
Non-working conditions
The fast sequence cannot be selected when:
no cassette is present
the carriage is in loading position
the digital mode is selected
the tomography is selected
the panoramic mode is selected
a division program has already started.
Description
At the end of a fast sequence program , the function is automatically
reset.
6.2.4 Test
Function
Test execution of the Seriograph or Tomography movement.
Application
This key allows the simulation of a Standard or Tomographic
program according to the setting carried out.
Working conditions
To carry out the simulation of a Standard program, it is sufficient to
push key 36.
To carry out the simulation of a tomographic program, joystick 45
(Figure 6) shall be activated downwards and key 36 pushed at the
same time.
Non-working conditions
X-ray tube not at 0.
Description
The Test execution both under standard and tomographic conditions
does not activate the exits towards the generator and does not entail
any reduction in the program.
Function
Manual adjustment of Scopy kV and mA.
Application
Manual adjustment allows to adjust the Scopy data to special
requirements.
Working conditions
By pushing key 13, the relevant led is lit signalling that the manual
function is activated. Under this condition keys 7 and 8 increase or
decrease the value of kV and mA.
By pushing key 13 again the function is off.
Non-working conditions
Keys 7 and 8 are not active when manual function is not selected
(led 13 off).
Description
The set value of kV is stored even when manual function is off. This
value is therefore found even after the function or the equipment are
off.
Function
Adjustment of monitor brightness and contrast.
Application
This adjustment allows the variation of monitor brightness and
contrast adapting them to the requirements of the images.
Working condition
By pushing keys 9 or 10 ,monitor contrast will be increased or
reduced respectively.
By pushing keys 11 or 12, monitor brightness will be increased or
reduced respectively.
Non-working condition
None.
Description
The set values of brightness and contrast are stored even when the
equipment is off. These values are therefore found when the
equipment is switched on again.
NOTE:
* This function is not available on some type of monitors.
Function
Vertical and horizontal reversal of the images on monitor.
Application
This adjustment allows to reverse the images on monitor and adapt
them to the required perspective.
Working conditions
The vertical and horizontal reversal of the images on monitor will be
obtained by pushing keys 15 and 17 respectively. The reversal is
shown when the relevant leds are lit.
Non-working conditions
None.
Function
Selection of the Brilliance Intensifier shooting field.
Application
This selection allows to magnify an area of particular interest. On the
contrary it allows to visualise a larger field.
Working conditions
By pushing one the keys, the relevant led is lit selecting the
corresponding field. Only one led can be active. The field size is set
on installation according to the following conditions:
key 14: minimum field - max. magnification
key 16: medium field - medium magnification
key 18: max. field - minimum magnification.
Non-working conditions
None.
Description
The activation of one of these keys causes the variation of:
the I.I. field
the collimator field
the seriograph limiting devices.
In case a single field I.I. is installed, the change in this selection will
not cause any effect.
In case a 4 field I.I. is installed, all leds may be off. This can be
obtained by pressing the key corresponding to the lit led. In this
situation, the field selection is the following:
no led lit, maximum field selected (minimum enlargement)
led on key 18 lit, intermediate 1 field selected (small
enlargement)
led on key 16 lit, intermediate 2 field selected (medium
enlargement)
led on key 14 lit, minimum field selected (maximum
enlargement).
6.7 Tomography
Function
Tomographic function entrance /exit.
Application
This key is used for the tomographic function entrance/exit. The
action of this key is coupled with joystick 45 (Figure 6) downward.
Working conditions
Tomography entrance:
By pushing key 19 the relevant led starts flashing with slow
frequency showing that the tomographic function has been
booked.
By acting on joystick 45 downward, the equipment is prepared to
the tomographic function. This action creates some movements
(which are blocked when the joystick is released) if the positions
of the different elements of the equipment are not within the
allowed range. Considering the above the following movements
can be activated towards the indicated positions:
compressor re-entry in park position
SID at 1140
centering a 0 column
80 mm layer height
scanning re-entry in the tomography limits.
When all the positions have been reached, led 19 is lit
continuously and an acoustic signal indicates the completion of
the tomographic positioning.
Non-working conditions
None.
Description
If the equipment is equipped with a I.I. larger than 12 the
tomographic function is not allowed with tilting lower than 0
(towards Trendelenburg).
By acting on joystick 45 or key 51 (Figure 6), over the horizontal
position towards Trendelenburg of the table, the movement is
stopped and display 4 starts flashing advising the operator that the
tomography is not available.
When the tomographic function or the sub-program Sighting are
active the following movements are not available from joystick:
Hunting
FFL
Compressor.
Function
Layer height adjustment and automatic increase.
Application
The layer height adjustment (28 and 29) allows to modify the
position of the virtual cut inside the organ to be tested. The value of
the layer height is shown on display 4 with an accuracy of 2mm.
The function of automatic increase (27) allows to automatically
increase the height of the cut level of a quantity which depends on
the set tomography angle.
Working conditions
The layer height adjustment is designed with 2 speeds automatically
selected according to the following conditions:
slow speed 1 mm/sec for 2 seconds.
Keeping the control pushed is automatically set:
high speed 10 mm/sec.
When the control is released at the following activation the slow
speed will be selected.
By pushing key 27 the relevant led is lit advising the operator that
the automatic increase function of the layer height is active.
This function generates the increase of the stratigraphy fulcrum at
the end of every tomography, of a quantity depending on the
tomography angle selected according to this table:
Angle mm increase
7 30
20 20
30 10
45 5
Non-working conditions
Equipment not in tomographic function
Sighting function active
Column not at 0.
Function
Selection of tomography angles and speeds.
Application
These selections allow to adapt Tomography to the organ to be
tested. The speed selection (21 or 22) allows to modify the time with
equal angle, therefore modifying the X-ray quantity sent to the
patient. The angle selection (23, 24, 25 or 26) allows to obtain
different cutting thickness.
Working conditions
At the entrance into the tomographic function the slow speed (21)
and the 45 angle (26) are selected by default. It will be possible to
modify these selections and adapt them to the test requirements.
The operator is advised of the set selection when the relevant leds
are lit.
In no case both speeds or more than one angle can be selected at the
same time.
In the tomographic function one speed and one angle will always be
selected.
Non-working conditions
Equipment not in tomographic function
Sighting function active
Column not at 0.
Description
It may occur that the execution of a tomography or of a tomographic
Test (36 - Figure 6) are aborted. In this case the leds relevant to the
set speed and layer flash advising the operator that the equipment is
not ready for another tomography.
Act on joystick 45 (Figure 6) -downward to restore hunting to 0
position.
When the position is achieved the leds are lit continuously advising
the operator that the tomographic positioning has been completed.
6.7.4 Sighting
Function
Standard radiographies alternated with tomographies.
Application
Execution of exposures with standard projections to be alternated
with tomographic tests keeping the tomographic selections unvaried,
thus accelerating the passage times from one function to the other.
Working conditions
The function Sighting can be selected when the tomographic
program is active.
By pushing key 20 the relevant led is lit advising the operator that
the function is active.
Display 4, the leds of the set speed and angle and the layer
automatic increase led , if any, are off thus blocking the selection.
By pushing key 20 again the function is reset, the relevant led is off
and the tomographic selection previously blocked are proposed
again.
Non-working conditions
Equipment not in tomographic function
Seriograph-tube carriage not within the limits
Column not at 0.
Description
When the tomographic function or the sub-program Sighting are
active the following movements are not available from joystick:
Hunting
FFL
Compressor.
Function
Inclination and centering of the tube-carrying column.
Application
This movement allowed within a range from +40 to -40 allows to
carry out oblique projections of organs to be tested.
The rotation point of the column corresponds to the film level.
The inclination value expressed in degrees is visualised on display 1
with an accuracy of 1.
The angles towards the table head side are considered negative.
Working conditions
By moving the joystick leftward the hunting movement towards the
table head side is obtained (negative angles).
The movement stop will be automatic at limit switch (-40).
The same is valid also for the opposite side.
By moving the joystick upward the vertical centering of the column
with respect to the table will be obtained.
Non-working conditions
Tomographic function active
Sighting function active
Compressor not in park position.
Description
The downward movement of this joystick is used as function of
RESET of all resettable alarms. As all alarms are accompanied by
an intermittent acoustic signal, the first action of this joystick stops
the buzzer , the second action resets the alarm.
Function
Movement of the seriograph-tube carriage.
Application
This movement allowed within a range of 570 mm allows to translate
the X-ray beam with respect to the longitudinal axis of the table.
Working condition
By acting on joystick leftward the moving of the group toward the
head side of the table will be obtained.
The same is valid also for the opposite side.
If the tomographic or sighting function are active, the movement
range is limited according to the set angle and layer height as
described in paragraph 6.7.1.
If the equipment is equipped with a I.I. larger than 12" the movement
is limited in the direction toward head when tilting is in a position
lower than 0. This limitation remains valid until tilting has a value
equal to or exceeding 85.
By acting on the tilting control, if the carriage is out of the allowed
range, the return within the allowed range will be automatically
activated.
Non-working condition
The movement is not allowed when:
the compressor is in the compression zone
the equipment is switched on in the alarm condition 085 (layer
not at film level and column not 0).
Description
If the position of the longitudinal patient-carrying table is such to
require the return to the central position during tilting, this
movement will automatically be activated along with the movement
of the seriograph carriage in order to keep the X-ray beam centered
on the patient.
The carriage movement will follow, whenever necessary, the
movement of the patient-carrying table until reaching the limit
switch where it will be automatically stopped.
Function
Movement of the focus-film length.
Application
This movement allowed within a range of 470 mm allows to modify
the length between the focus and the film in order to vary the
magnifying ratio of the object in the film and to adapt the equipment
to different test types.
The value of the real length between focus and film expressed in cm
is visualised on display 2 with an accuracy of 2mm.
Working condition
By moving the joystick upwards, the FFL will be increased; by
moving it downwards, a decrease will be obtained.
The movement will be automatically stopped at limit switches.
Non-working condition
The movement is not allowed when:
the tomographic or sighting functions are active
the equipment is switched on in the alarm condition 085 (layer
not at film level).
Description
When the tomographic function is set, the FFL is automatically
taken to 110 cm.
When the function is reset, the FFL is automatically taken to
100 cm.
Function
Table tilting and centering.
Application
This movement allowed within a range from +90 to -90 allows to
carry out tests on patients in vertical position (+90), horizontal
position (0), Trendelenburg (-90) or in all the intermediate
positions. The inclination value expressed in degrees is visualised on
display 3 with an accuracy of 1. The angles towards Trendelenburg
position are considered negative.
Working condition
By moving the joystick leftward or by acting on key 51, the tilting
movement toward Trendelenburg position will be obtained (negative
angles).
The movement will be automatically stopped at limit switch (-90).
The same is valid for the opposite side of the joystick or for key 49.
By moving the joystick upward or by acting on key 50, the table
horizontal centering will be obtained.
Non-working condition
None.
Description
If the position of the longitudinal patient -carrying table is such to
require the return to central position during tilting, this movement
will automatically be activated along with the movement of the
seriograph carriage in order to keep the X-ray beam centered on the
patient.
During this phase of automatic return the tilting movement speed
decreases in order to allow the return of the patient-carrying table
without exceeding the collision limit.
If two opposite controls are activated at the same time from the
control panel and from the table push button panel the movement is
stopped.
The downward movement of this joystick is used as entrance/exit
function from the tomographic function as described in paragraph
6.7.1.
Function
Longitudinal and transverse centering of the patient-carrying table.
Application
This function allows to align the transverse and longitudinal axis of
the patient-carrying table to the X-ray beam.
Working condition
By moving the joystick upwards the transverse axis centering will be
obtained; by moving it downwards the longitudinal axis centering
will be obtained.
Non-working condition
The movements are not allowed when the compressor is not in the
park position.
Function
Longitudinal and transverse movement of the patient-carrying table.
Application
These movements allow a range of:
1000 mm (head side) and 600 mm (feet side) longitudinally
115 mm (internal side) and 115 mm (external side) transversally.
These movements allow the centering of the organ to be tested with
respect to the X-ray beam.
Working condition
By moving the joystick leftward or by acting on key 52, the
patient-carrying table will move toward the head side of the table.
The movement will be automatically stopped at limit switch or in
case of collision, if any.
By moving the joystick rightward or by acting on key 53, the
patient-carrying table will move toward the feet side of the table.
The movement will be automatically stopped at limit switch or in
case of collision, if any.
By moving the joystick upward or by acting on key 54, the
patient-carrying table will move toward the internal side of the table.
The movement will be automatically stopped at limit switch.
By moving the joystick downward or by acting on key 55, the
patient-carrying table will move toward the external side of the table.
The movement will be automatically stopped at limit switch.
Non-working condition
The movements are not allowed when the compressor is not in the
park position.
Description
If the position of the longitudinal patient-carrying table is such to
require the return towards the central position during tilting, this
movement will be automatically activated along with the movement
of the seriograph carriage in order to keep the X-ray beam centered
on the patient.
When the table reaches the vertical or Trendelenburg position, the
patient carrying table reaches longitudinally the position aligned
with the table side beam.
6.8.7 Compressor
Function
Compressor.
Application
The compression device is irreplaceable in the execution of the
digestive system tests.
Working condition
The compressor positioning takes place by means of two different
movements:
in/out movement of the compression cone with respect to the
X-ray beam
up/down movement of the compression cone with respect to the
patient-carrying table.
By moving joystick 48 downward, the compressor cone will be
aligned with the X-ray beam and then will carry out the downstroke
toward the patient.
By moving it upward, the compressor up-movement and then the
exit from the X-ray field will be obtained.
Non-working condition
The compressor movement is not allowed when the tomographic
function is active. The entrance into this function causes the
movement of the compressor towards the park position.
Description
The compression cone can be removed from the compressor device
by pulling the blocking knob B (Figure 5) and extracting it as
indicated by arrow b (Figure 5).
WARNING:
, In case the machine should stop working when the compressor cone is
in touch with the patient, the compressor cone itself can be removed by
unscrewing the emergency stop A (Figure 5). In this way, the cone can be
raised as shown by arrow a (Figure 5) thus freeing the patient.

Function
Request of scopy- X-rays.
Application
The execution of a fluoroscopic test is necessary to locate the zone to
be radiographed.
Working condition
By pushing the right control on the pedal it is possible to obtain the
emission of the fluoroscopic radiation from the X-ray tube.
Non-working condition
The Scopy control towards the generator is not allowed when the
following conditions occur:
cassette holding carriage not in park position
tube not at 0
preparation control active
collimator with size larger than the I.I. selected field (manual
mode or I.I. field selection lower than the present one)
"Free Selection" working place selected.
Function
Request of Preparation and Graphy X-rays.
Application
The execution of a radiographic test is the main purpose of a
radiological equipment.
Working condition
By pushing the first release of the left control on the pedal it is
possible to obtain from the generator all those actions suitable to
prepare the X-ray tube to X-ray emission.
At the same time the equipment prepares some of its elements to
receive the radiation.
By pushing the second release of the left control on the pedal the
X-ray emission will be obtained.
The activation of the preparation control stops all movements
including the collimator manual movement. Only the hunting
movement during the tomography program is allowed.
The following programs of preparation X-rays are possible:
standard
fast sequence
tomography.
Each of these programs is characterised by different conditions and
timings.
Here below are the different phases of these programs exemplified by
some diagrams.
Non-working condition
The Preparation X-rays control to generator is not activated when the
following conditions are present:
no cassette in the seriograph
division program not selected
tube not at 0
collimator in manual mode.
Once all the parameters are set as described above, it will be necessary
to activate the centering joystick and then push the test push button.
For a better comprehension of the above sequences, here below is the
scheme showing the "tomographic exposure" function and the relevant
alarm messages which can be generated by anomalies occurring during
the sequence.

NOTE:
* The following functions are possible only when the installation is
equipped with a digital image system. The code "DSI" appears on
display 5 (as shown in the figure) when the "digital working position"
is selected by the generator control panel. During the execution of a
test, the Mercury 332 will therefore carry out some phases other
than the ones described in the previous section.
Function
Request of Preparation and Graphy X-rays in digital mode.
Application
Execution of a radiographical test in digital mode.
Working condition
By pushing the first left release on the pedal it is possible to obtain
all those actions from the generator suitable to prepare the X-ray
tube to X-ray emission.
By pushing the second left release on the pedal the X-ray emission
will be obtained.
The activation of the preparation control stops all the movements
including the collimator manual movement. Only the hunting
movement during the tomography program is allowed.
The following preparation X-rays programs are possible:
Digital radiography
Digital tomography.
Each of these programs is characterised by different conditions and
timings.
Here below are listed the different program phases exemplified by
some diagrams.
Non-working condition
The digital function entrance is not allowed when the following
conditions occur:
X-ray tube not at 0.
The entrance into digital mode can take place with two different
seriograph conditions:
no set division
one set division.
Once the digital function has been selected, coming from the first
condition it will be possible to activate the carriage movement and the
collimator will take a size within 0 and the selected I.I. size.
Coming from the second condition, the carriage will stop in park position
until coming out of digital mode. In this second case led 38 is lit thus
advising the operator that a cassette is present in the seriograph and the
collimator can take a size within 0 and the smaller size between the size
of the selected I.I. and the size of the set division.

7 DIAGNOSIS
The Mercury 332 software is designed to diagnose some anomalous or
dangerous situations which may occur to the equipment.
When one or more of these diagnosis situations take place, the table
movements are stopped and the controls to accessories blocked. Panel
displays 1 and 2 show the flashing number referred to the alarm
accompanied by an acoustic signal.
The alarms are subdivided into three groups:
Collisions
By activating one or more movement controls it is possible to reach
the collision safety limit set by the technician during the installation
phase; the collision safety limit creates a software imaginary barrier
which cannot be overcome from any side of the equipment.
In this case, on displays 1 and 2 the blinking message COLLIS
appears. On display 3 instead a two digit number indicates which
part of the equipment has reached the collision position and which
part of the room is involved. The first digit indicates the part of the
equipment that has reached the collision position, while the second
digit indicates the obstacle as described in the following table.
To alert the operator that some of the movements may be disabled,
the blinking message COLLIS is displayed until a joystick is
depressed.
After pressing and releasing the joystick, the display returns to its
normal condition.
Pressing again a command, the COLLIS message re-appears until the
collision position is cleared.
Operating alarms
The alarms of this group are generated by operating errors due to
incorrect manoeuvres of the operator or to malfunctions of external
accessories.
As these alarms do not generate any dangerous or risky situation for
the patient, the operator and the equipment itself, they can be reset
without switching off the installation.
By moving joystick 43 downward twice, the first movement stops the
acoustic signal, the second one resets the alarm.
7.1.1 COLLIS 03
7.2 Alarms
All the alarms listed here below are visualised as Err flashing on display
1 followed by a flashing code on display 2.
It may occur that when the equipment is switched on the following alarm
appears:
Err 085
This alarm is generated when the equipment is switched off with
tomographic function active.
If the column is at 0 the layer is automatically restored to film level;
once this position has been reached the alarm 085 is reset.
If the column is not at 0, joystick 43 shall be moved upward to restore
its vertical position.
Now the layer is automatically restored to film level; once this position
has been reached, the alarm 085 is reset.
When the alarm 085 appears, the seriograph carriage and hunting
movements are not allowed. Only the column centering will be allowed.
