I Miss You Blink 182 Music Video Treatment

Background Information
Production Company Name: ASB Media
The product will run for approximately 3-4 minutes and feature a narrative
revolving around a young teenage boy who is experiencing the challenges of
attraction and romance within his suburban area. The core moral of our video will
be that society should not judge a book by its cover and express the importance
of individuality in the urban state. Our main goal within this video is to allow our
audience to relate to the product and compare it to their own situation, perhaps
even use the video as a platform to act upon and truly express themselves. The
video will aim to make a change in our demographics lifestyle and esteem. The
video will also have a comedic tone thus providing us the goal of creating
humour and providing the audience with a sense of hilarity. Another important
goal of ours is to sell the artist which we will do by predominantly featuring them
within the music video.
Concept
There are two major themes running through the core of the production, these
being youth culture and love. I envisage these themes being largely expressed
and represented through our main character who experiences the triumphs and
tribulations of both. We want the video to truly pay homage to youth identity
while retaining the classical influence found in many of the more successful
music videos, in many ways we are combining the film genres of romance, teen
and comedy. The concept of our video features the main character of Alex who
discovers that the girl he is attracted to is in a new relationship. This news truly
takes a toll on him and he becomes profusely empathetic and unlucky because of
it. The video showcases Alex as a deep thinking middle-class student who is
struggling with his love for this girl and cannot retract her presence from his
mind, the course of the narrative features him exploring his own self-esteem and
expressing himself through other formats to attract his infatuation.
Narrative
The narrative will revolve around a broken relationship between two people, this
will relate to the lyrics of the track and also convey the emotional tone of
longing. The narrative will resolve around the male perspective as it is
dominant gender within our target audience. The video will showcase a series of
actions which display the character grieving and longing such as staring at
photographs, struggling to use the phone, staring blankly out of windows.
Throughout the central majority of the narrative this characters will be living
their normal life with the shadows of longing, heartbreak and passion looming
over them. We are aiming to have our protagonist appear as somewhat of a
tragic-hero in order to make him more appealing to our audience.
The video begins with our protagonist Alex sitting at his desk with his computer
in front on him. This is a mid-shot which shows a photo frame on his desk. The
camera then cuts to a close up of Alexs face in the glow of the computer light
with a horrified expression on his face. The camera then cuts to a close up of the
screen which shows that a girl has updated their social media relationship status
to in a relationship. We are then shown a close up of the photo frame revealing
it to be Alex with the girl from the website. The music then begins and the scene
changes. In the next scene we see our protagonist leaning against a brick wall.
He is texting on his phone and a cut to an over the shoulder shot reveals that he
is texting a female character. Alexs anxiety gets the better of him and in a blind
rage he deletes the text, throws his phone to the ground and storms out of shot.
The scene then changes to Alex daydreaming at a desk in school. A ball of paper
is thrown at him and he unravels it to read many jeers and insults regarding his
relationship struggle. Alex walks out of the room. The next shot shows Alex sat at
his dining room table while people behind him change festive decorations to
display a long passage of time. We then see the protagonist throwing darts at the
antagonists face on a dartboard which displays intense anger and clearly shows
his frustration within himself, shortly after this Alex begins to see things start
fading away around him convincing him of the decline in his relationship status.
After multiple opportunities to contact his loved one Alex eventually receives a
text from her which leads him to run outside and locate his bike, unfortunately
this has a flat tyre so Alex is forced to use his old skateboard to rush to meet her.
Eventually Alex arrives at the destination and the couple stare out over the
counsel estate while the camera pans up creating the ultimate climax to the
product.
Performance
We will also include a performance by the band during the significant choruses.
This way we can truly sell our artist to the audience and create a face behind the
music and visuals.
Editing
The editing within the production will consist of both montage and continuity. The
reason for montage-editing is that it widens our shot/scene variation horizon. If
we stick to continuity editing the product will not be able to truly display our
narrative due to the shortened track time of around four minutes, henceforth
making montage a very viable option to have at our dispense. We will be using
continuity editing to piece certain shots together in specific scenes including
shot-reverse shots and scene displaying action. To make the video appear more
aesthetically pleasing will keep a time signature and make the transitions take
place to the beat of the track. By doing so we will retain a sophisticated balance
within our production rather than have the audience become disarrayed by the
lack of timing within our shots. These transitions will mainly consist of fades and
cuts. We will also be exploiting multiple time-lapses within the video to really
create an atmospheric tone to inspire deeper emotion for our audience. These
time-lapses will be of sunsets and day turning into night over the town. The time-
lapses will primarily be used within the introduction of the track to initially set
the tone while also presenting a degree of establishment. We do not intend to
use many other visual effects such as CGI due to the lack of budget however
some colour intensifiers may be used to create effect depending on whether we
deem it necessary.
Cinematography
The music video will feature an array of shot types and camera movements. To
truly capture the longing tone and the great mass of emotive representation
within the production we will be using a selection of close-up shots including
extreme-extreme-close and wide- -close ups. We will also be using mid-shots to
present a similar execution and idea. Another example of a shot we will be using
is the wide/long shot, this will perfectly encapsulate our loneliness of our tragic
hero, this will be supported and reinforced by relevant use of loose framing to
best represent the protagonist feeling lost and empty. In terms of camera
movement, we will also be aiming to incorporate a host of ideas, specifically
focus pulls from a scenic background or object to the protagonists face, pans
and tracking to emphasise character movement and handheld to offer the
audience a verisimilitude. In saying this, much of our product will be shot using
the Steadicam mode of filming using a tripod.

Costume
Our main character, Alex, will primarily be outfitted in casual clothing such as
jeans, t-shirts and checked shirts. This will make him easier to relate to for the
demographic while also creating an heir of attitude surrounding him. Our band
who will feature in the chorus sections of the song will mainly be wearing black
clothing and will have tattoo sleeves. A common convention within the genre of
pop-punk. We want the band to appear relatively mature within their music yet
still captivating and responsive towards our audience. Henceforth we will use a
performance style of production during the chorus to truly engage the band and
the video together while also creating action between the viewers, the product
and the artist themselves.

Locations
The locations used in this product will be used to convey our protagonists
emotions while also remaining true to the conventions of the pop-punk genre, for
example, the protagonists bedroom/house, Holmer Green Senior School, urban
suburban areas such as streets and the Wycombe town centre and some natural
abstract locations such as the local woodlands or fields. The reason for these
abstract locations is that they will convey the theme of loneliness and present
our protagonist as a deep-thinker and henceforth oppose the typical genre
stereotypes of young people. In general, we will use a wide variety of locations to
best present the narratives major themes and create an erratic display of
emotion which is largely influenced by the surrounding setting. The reason we
have chosen these locations also is that they are widely accessible for much of
the young audience and will make it easy for the demographic to passively
engage. We will also be filming a large amount of the production inside a house
to truly capture the essence of fear of the outside or wider unknown. Here are
some images of our primary instinctive locations.
Tone
The video will be distinctively shot in natural lighting. We may use some visual
effects to truly emphasise the colour specifics of distinct shots such as time lapse
and daylight views yet the narrative shall not be shot in any greyscale or sepia
formats. We will truly aim to exploit the concept of colour in this music video to
try and emphasise the narratives message and moral. We want to make it
aesthetically pleasing and satisfying for our audience as best possible.
