BIOGRAPHY - Jonathan Ive
BorninChingford,Essex,in1967,JonathanIvewas
fascinated by taking objects apart as a child.
Following his graduation from the University of
Northumbria, he started a design studio,
Tangerine, with a colleague. The company
designed toilets for Ideal Standard, inspired by marine themes, and one of their
otherclientswassoftwaregiantApple.
Apple's design chief Jonathan Ive has been with the company for 20 years and
helpedtoturnarounditsfortunes.WhenIvejoinedApplein1992,thecompanywas
atitslowestebb,havingoustedfounderSteveJobsandfightingapatent
battle with Microsoft. He was promoted when Steve Jobs returned
fiveyearslater,designingtheiMac,Powerbook,iPod,iPadandother
flagshipproductstohugeinternationalacclaim.
Ive has led the Apple design team since 1996 and his main
achievement has been making Apples products instantly
recognisable from their minimalistic curves, challenging the
notion that technological products are purely functional. Ive,
Apples senior vice president of Industrial Design, signed a
huge"goldenhandcuffs"dealfouryearsago.Regulatorydocumentsshowheisnow
duetoreceive25mworthofAppleshares,whichhepurchasedforonly7m.
Hisproductshavewonahugerangeofawards,includingtheprestigiousIndustrial
DesignExcellenceAwardintheUSA,andtheLondonDesignMuseumsDesignerof
theYearaward.
JonathanIvehaspioneeredcomputingwiththedesignoftheiPadin2010.TheiPad
hassoldmillionsworldwide,justliketheiPod.
IvenowlivesnearSanFranciscowithhiswife,Heather,andtheirsons.Hewasgiven
aCBEin2006andreceivedaknighthoodintheNewYearHonoursin2012.
