ICE Assignment Chapter 1

This document contains descriptions of 4 problems related to engines. Problem 1.2 involves deriving an equation and plotting piston velocity. Problem 1.6 calculates air flow rate given engine speed, volumetric efficiency, and inlet manifold density. Problem 1.8 calculates brake mean effective pressure and mean piston speed using torque, engine speed, bore, and stroke. Problem 1.9 calculates fuel-to-air ratio and air flow rate using various engine specifications and performance measurements.

Problem 1.

2
a) Derive Equation 1.6;
b) Plot the dimensionless piston velocity for s 100 mm and l 150 mm .
Problem 1.6
The volumetric efficiency of the fuel injected marine engine in Problem 1.5 is 0.80 and
the inlet manifold density is 50% greater than the standard atmospheric density of
amb 1.17 kg / m3 . If the engine speed is 2600 rpm, what is the air flow rate (kg/s)?

Problem 1.8
A six-cylinder two-stroke engine produces a torque of 1100 Nm at a speed of 2100 rpm.
It has a bore of 123 mm and a stroke of 127 mm. What is its bmep and mean piston
speed?
Problem 1.9
A 380 cc single-cylinder two-stroke motorcycle engine is operating at 5500 rpm. The
engine has a bore of 82 mm and a stroke of 72 mm. Performance testing gives a bmep of
6.81 bar, bsfc of 0.49 kg/kW.hr, and delivery ratio of 0.748.
a) What is the fuel to air ratio?
b) What is the air flow rate (kg/s)?
