Final Intern CT Observation 1

1) The lesson plan is for a 2nd grade math class on creating bar graphs. 2) Students will use data from a previous picture graph lesson to create a bar graph representing the eye colors of students in the class. 3) Formative and summative assessments include observing student participation and answers during the lesson, and collecting math packets to check independent work.

Lesson Content
What Standards (national
or state) relate to this MACC.2. MD.4.10- Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to
lesson? represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart,
and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph.

Essential Understanding
How do you make a bar graph to show data?

Objectives- What are you

teaching? SWBAT make bar graphs to represent data.
SWBAT make a bar graph using data from a previous lesson that they have collected.
SWBAT make a bar graph using data from a picture graph.

Rationale
I am teaching this objective to show students how they can use data that they collected
and turn it into a bar graph that represents their class population.
Students need to be able to read and understand graphs to see the important data that it
represents.
Students are analyzing and interpreting data, which gives them the opportunity to use
critical thinking skills.
Students can use the data in the bar graph to answer questions, solve problems, and
formulate their own questions about data.

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have Formative:
mastered your objectives? I will observe the students questions and answers while creating our class bar graph
based on the eye colors of the class. I will also check the two share and show questions
on page 486 of their math packet before allowing them to move on.

Summative:
I will collect their math packets at the end of the lesson to see how well the students did

on their own.

What Content Knowledge

is necessary for a teacher The teacher must know how to set up a bar graph and what the different parts of a bar
to teach this material? graph consist of, such as the title, labels, that the bars start at 0, etc.

What background
knowledge is necessary for The students need to know the various components that make up a picture graph, which
a student to successfully includes labels, title, key, and the pictures that go inside the graph. The students also
meet these objectives? need to be able to understand how to find out the values for each item.

What misconceptions
might students have about The children may draw bars that do not accurately show the data. (make the bars too
this content? long or too short)

Lesson Implementation
Teaching Methods
I will use direct instruction for my whole lesson. Then I will use guided release as we
create the graph together. Finally the students will work independently on their math
packets.

Step-by-Step Plan Time Who is

responsibl
2 min e? 1. Review the parts of a picture graph and introduce the parts of
Teacher a bar graph.
3 min 2. Read the for the teacher problem at the bottom of page 485
Both aloud and have the students solve the problem.
5-10 3. Ask the following questions:
min Student - What does the title tell you about the data in the graph?
(title tells that the data in the graph show all the writing
tools in a box)
- How many different kinds of writing tools are in the box?

Explain. (4 kinds b/c there are 4 bars)

- How many writing tools are pencils? (5)
- How many writing tools are chalk or markers? Explain your
answer. (6 are chalk or markers b/c 3+3=6)
- How do you find the number of writing tools that are in the
20 box? (add the number of each type of writing tool
min Both 3+4+3+5=15)
4. Review the picture graph and pull out the data to begin
creating the bar graph. Set up the graph before adding the
bars. Have the students come up and place the pieces of
paper on the graph that represents their eye color.
15 Student 5. Have the students work on pages 486-488 of their packet and
min review their work when done. This is also when students will
be pulled to the back of the class for small group instruction.

What will you do if a student struggles with the content?

The students will be pulled to a small group at the back of the class to work
with my CT on first grade math or for one-on-one help depending on how much
help they need and their skill level.

What will you do if a student masters the content quickly?

I will challenge them to create their own graph and have them survey the class
to collect the data for this bar graph.

Meeting your students If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural
needs as people and as backgrounds of your students?
learners The students all have certain color eyes so they all can partake in creating this
graph.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
Students will be able to read almost any bar graph they come across outside of
the class.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?
For students who need additional challenge, I will have them create their own
graph and have them survey the class to collect the data for this bar graph.
They also have the option to work on graphing file folders at their desk.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional
language support?
I will have them work with another student that can translate for them.

Accommodations
J,A,M will need small group instruction at the back of the class, working on first grade
math.
M will need some of the word problems translated for her.

Materials
I will use the picture graphs we created last week to aid in creating the bar graphs for
this lesson.
Chart paper
Markers
Slips of paper to create the bar graph
Math packets
File folder game
