Chemistry 223 Organic Lab I

Regulations & Penalties


BLACKBOARD

1. You MUST register through CUNY portal to use blackboard 8 (https://portal.cuny.edu/).


2. Check the Blackboard (http://bb.hunter.cuny.edu/) site for the lab manual. You can download
either the entire manual or individual labs so that you can print them out (see Labs section).
3. Explore the Blackboard site for hints and tips pertaining to each experiment (see Information
Section).
4. Any e-mail sent to students through the Blackboard site will be sent to their Hunter e-mail
addresses. You must be able to get access to your Hunter e-mail but you can set it up so that
your messages will be forwarded to the e-mail account of your choice. There are instructions
for doing this on the main Blackboard page.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIPS

1. CAUTION: If you are pregnant, you cannot continue to attend the Organic Chemistry
lab
2. For your safety, please provide and wear appropriate clothing, including a lab coat, gloves,
safety goggles and closed shoes.
3. Contact lenses should NOT be worn in the Organic labeven under safety glasses.
4. If you have long hair, it should always be tied back to avoid a potential fire or safety hazard.

REGULATIONS & PENALTY POINTS

Your overall grade will be dependent on your preparation for and performance in the lab, pre-lab
quizzes, the quality of your lab reports, and your scores on Recitation exams. However, points will also
be deducted for certain common offenses. Your TAs have been instructed to enforce these point
penalties throughout the semester. The point deduction for each offense is indicated as follows:

1. If you are late for the lab: 5 points


2. If you are more than 20 min late, you will not be permitted to enter the lab or start the
experiment
3. If you have no pre-lab (outline of the procedure, safety hazards, physical constants etc. in
tabular forms): 10 points. You will not be allowed to begin the experiment without a written
pre-lab.
4. If you otherwise demonstrate that you are unprepared to perform the lab procedure: 5 points.
5. You MUST wear safety goggles AT ALL TIMES in the lab. If you remove your goggles at
any time during the lab: 10 points
6. Late lab reports 5 points if the report is 1 day late and 2 points for each additional day
after that.
7. If you refuse or neglect to clean up lab bench and return chemicals to shelf or otherwise engage
in hazardous laboratory practices: 5 points
8. And last but not least, cellular phones are not permitted in the lab. If you have your cell phone
with you, it MUST be turned off. The penalty: 5 points if it rings and you answer it!!!

The regulations will take effect immediately.
