Process Flow Diagrams
Piping & Instrumentation Diagram
Process Flow diagram
PFD
Used in chemical and process engineering.
This kind of diagrams shows :
The flow of chemical materials
and, the equipment involved in the process
PFD shows major equipment and doesn't show details.
A PFD does not show minor components, piping systems, piping
ratings and etc.
PFDs are applied in visitor information and new employee training.

Piping and Instrumentation
P&I D
Process and instrumentation diagram
Flowsheets
P&ID includes more details than a PFD
(P&I) diagrams are of fundamental importance in process.
Their formulation is a major stage in the design of a process plant.

Functional Identification
The letters are a shorthand way of indicating the type of instrument
and its function in the system

The first letter identifies the measured or initiating variable

the second letter is a modifier,
and the remaining letters identify the function.
Common Primary device symbols

A number of functional symbols or pictorial drawings are available
for most P&ID elements.
