Homework 1 Due: Tuesday 01/31: CE310: Soil Mechanics Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

This document provides the details for Homework 1 assignments in the CE310 Soil Mechanics course. It includes 7 practice problems related to soil properties and phase relationships. Problem 1 asks students to calculate moisture content, moist density, dry density, void ratio, and porosity for a given soil sample. Problem 2 involves similar calculations using data on moist weight, moisture content, and specific gravity. The remaining problems involve using additional soil properties like maximum dry density, natural water content, and degree of compaction to solve various soil mechanics calculations.

CE310: Soil Mechanics

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Homework 1 Due: Tuesday 01/31

Problems 1-4: Complete the phase diagram for each. Solve using basic phase relationships based on the
phase diagram (i.e. using only WT, MT, Ws, MS, Ww, Mw, Vs, Vw, Va, Vv, VT). You may check you answer
with equations that have been further developed in the text.

Problem 1: A 0.4-m3 moist soil sample has the following: Moist mass = 711.2 kg; Dry mass = 623.9 kg;
Specific gravity of soil solids = 2.68. Estimate: (a) Moisture content, (b) Moist density, (c) Dry density, (d)
Void ratio, (e) Porosity.

Problem 2: The moist weight of 0.2 ft3 of a soil is 23 lb. The moisture content and the specific gravity of
the soil solids are determined in the laboratory to be 11% and 2.7, respectively. Calculate the following:
(a) Moist unit weight (lb/ft3), (b) Dry unit weight (lb/ft3), (c) Void ratio, (d) Porosity, (e) Degree of
saturation (%), (f) Volume occupied by water (ft3).

Problem 3: For a given soil, the following are given: Gs = 2.67; moist unit weight, = 112 lb/ft3; and
moisture content, w = 10.8%. Determine: (a) Dry unit weight, (b) Void ratio, (c) Porosity, (d) Degree of
saturation (assume VT = 1 ft3)

Problem 4: The moist density of a soil is 1680 kg/m3. Given w = 18% and Gs = 2.73, determine: (a) Dry
density, (b) Porosity, (c) Degree of saturation, (d) Mass of water, in kg/m3, to be added to reach full
saturation (assume VT = 1m3)

Problem 5: For a given sand, the maximum and minimum void ratios are 0.78 and 0.43, respectively.
Given Gs = 2.67, determine the dry unit weight of the soil in kN/m3 when the relative density is 65%.

Problem 6: The natural water content of a sample taken from a soil deposit was found to be 11.5%. It
has been calculated that the maximum density for the soil will be obtained when the water content
reaches 21.5%. Compute how many grams of water must be added to each 1000g of soil (in its natural
state) in order to increase the water content to 21.5%.

Problem 7: A construction site requires 35,000 yd3 of soil in a compacted state with a moist unit weight
of 126 pcf at a water content of 14%.
If the uncompacted soil currently has a unit weight of 96 pcf and a water content of 14%, what total
volume of this soil is required to obtain the above volume of compacted soil?
Known: unit weight of water = 62.4pcf. Assume: Gs = 2.65
Hint: Weight of soil solids does not change due to compaction of the soil
