LEADERSHIP

&
ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

CASE 1 :
BRIDGING THE TWO WORLDS
THE ORGANIZATIONAL DILEMMA

GROUP 4 :
BRIDGING THE TWO WORLDS THE ORGANIZATIONAL DILEMMA

The case talks about the working culture where the writer worked, Aluminum Element Corp.
It shows that at the writer's workplace there was miscommunication between the management and
the employees. Management did not invite their employees to their meeting and they did not talk to
them in person, they used to sent memos to avoid a direct confrontation. This kind of behaviour
made their employees felt unsatisfied and demotivated. When the writer tried to effective
communication existed in the writer's workplace by having lunch together with the employess, he
faced the stereotype barrier since the writer himself was one of the management. The employees
wondered why the writer liked to have lunch with employees, because it was not how things were
done in Aluminum Element Corp. The employees stereotyped the writer as manager who did not
want to be related with their workers and they had indicated that certain behavior was expected
from managers therefore from the writer.
Another barrier that the writer faced was the individual-organizational perception conflict
between the management and their employees. They did not have the same perception, probably it
was caused that they were not used to communicate in personal but through memos. It is shown
when George, on of the management, tried to show his satisfaction of John's, on of the employees,
great work by saying we will be able to ship one time one large order to the West Coast. Probably,
John thought that it was some kind of punishment for their lack work.
The writer did well in trying to effective the communication by talking with the employees,
writing down the information, identifying where they were coming from, and trying to understand
the employees. We would like to use this kind of strategy in order to effective the communication.
Using this kind of interpersonal approached is effective in this kind of situation, this was shown by
the improvement that happened after the writer used this strategy.
The reason why John was upset probably because John thought that being sent to
management skill seminar means that the managers thought he did not perform good in work
whereas John thought and felt that he had pushed all of his effort in doing his work and it turned
well. In our opinion the writer should communicate all of the management's view and perception in
term of performance index to all of AEC's employees so that they will have the same view and
perception as the management. The point is good communication between the two world,
management side and employee side.
